"So I did," said Calderone, describing himself as a guy from New Jersey whose family hails from Palermo, Italy.

"I'm not a singer or a model or an actor or anything. I'm a guy," she said. "I'm just a guy, you know, and I just wanted to show my girl how much I love her, that's all."

Earlier in the evening, Nicki Minaj, winner of the hip-hop video award, said her new album will feature her inner male artist, Roman.

"He's a boy that lives inside of me," Minaj said. "He's a lunatic and he's gay."

"She's been a huge inspiration to me," Gomez said. "I just think that she doesn't really take no for an answer. A lot of people try to bring her down and maybe judge her too quickly, and she still makes a comeback and she's still hot."

Bieber called Spears "an icon," saying, "She opened the doors for young people to do what they love."

Lehman payout plan OK'd for creditor vote (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Creditors of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (LEHMQ.PK) will be allowed to vote on the failed bank's $65 billion payback plan, clearing a major hurdle in the path to ending the biggest bankruptcy in U.S. history.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge James Peck in Manhattan said he would enter an order approving the outline of Lehman's plan and send it to creditors for a November 4 vote, overruling a handful of objections from corporate creditors.

The disclosures in the plan outline are "abundant and adequate as to the issues in this too-big-to-fail enterprise," Peck told a packed courtroom.

Lehman faced a relatively small list of objections after negotiating support from several powerful critics -- including distressed investors and former trading partners -- prior to the hearing.

The Wall Street firm, crippled by bad mortgage bets, filed for bankruptcy on September 15, 2008, with $639 billion in assets, and its collapse was a catalyst of the financial crisis. Barclays Plc (BARC.L) took over a large part of its investment banking business in a rushed deal following the bankruptcy.

Lehman has been unloading assets and unwinding operations while in bankruptcy, a case that has provided work for an army of lawyers, advisers and accountants. Only after the company formally emerges from bankruptcy can it begin to pay back creditors.

In court on Tuesday, Lehman attorney Harvey Miller invoked Winston Churchill, telling the judge he hoped that the hearing would represent the "beginning of the end" of Lehman's three-year Chapter 11 odyssey, rather than the "end of the beginning."

Among supporters of Lehman's payback plan were two creditor groups that hold a combined $100 billion in claims, more than one-fourth of the roughly $360 billion in claims against Lehman.

Those groups include bondholders led by hedge fund Paulson & Co, and derivatives creditors such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc (GS.N) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N). Asian affiliates holding about $20 billion in claims have also pledged support.

Peck overruled objections from investment fund Mason Capital Management LLC, Centerbridge Credit Advisors LLC and others, praising a "compelling" compromise on payout terms supported by the vast majority of Lehman's 110,000 creditors.

ORDERLY HEARING

The swiftness of the hearing surprised even Peck, who had budgeted two days for the matter and told those gathered in his courtroom on Tuesday to prepare for a "long day."

But Tuesday's brisk pace may not foreshadow a simple exit from bankruptcy.

If creditors accept Lehman's plan, the matter would go back to Peck for a final approval hearing that could take between two and three weeks due to the complexities of certain objections the company is likely to face at the confirmation stage, Miller said.

The parties tentatively scheduled that hearing to begin on December 6.

Some of those objections may come from international affiliates, said Stephen Lubben, a bankruptcy law professor at Seton Hall Law School.

"There is still the international component to this case, and it's getting to the point where everyone may have to face up to that component, which I think they've been avoiding," Lubben said.

In general, he added, the process of managing objections will be difficult in a case as complex as Lehman's. The company will tweak its plan to the extent that it can resolve objections, he said.

"But if you tweak it too much, you have to resolicit and creditors have to vote again, so there's a trade-off," he said.

Even after creditors and the court approve a plan, Lehman must meet certain financing and other conditions, a process that could take additional days, weeks or months, a company spokeswoman said last week. Lehman has said it hopes to begin creditor payouts in the first quarter of 2012.

Lehman had hoped to continue post-bankruptcy through its Legacy Asset Management Co, an asset management company created to manage its real estate and other assets, but shelved the idea earlier this month after creditors opposed it.

Since the Chapter 11 filing, Lehman's pre-bankruptcy accounting practices have been under particular scrutiny, especially its use of the so-called Repo 105 method in which a company moves assets on and off its balance sheet. The company and its former executives, including ex-Chief Executive Richard Fuld, face investor lawsuits over their conduct ahead of the firm's collapse.

'Three Cups' author disputes fraud claims

Attorneys John Kauffman and Kevin Maclay asked a U.S. district judge in Missoula to reject certifying three plaintiffs' $5 million class-action lawsuit against Mortenson over what the plaintiffs say are false depictions of Mortenson's humanitarian work in Central Asia.

Former teacher Deborah Netter of Illinois and Montana residents Michele Reinhart and Dan Donovan claim that Mortenson duped 4 million people into buying his books by portraying events in them as true when they weren't, all for the purpose of making Mortenson a hero and to raise money.

The plaintiffs are asking Judge Donald Molloy to certify their class-action lawsuit and place all the money from Mortenson book purchases, which they estimate to be more than $5 million, into a trust to be used for humanitarian purposes.

The plaintiffs filed the lawsuit after published reports this spring by "60 Minutes" and author Jon Krakauer alleged that Mortenson lied in the books about how he became involved in building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan and other events depicted as true.

The reports also questioned whether Mortenson financially benefited from his charity, Central Asia Institute, and whether CAI built the number of schools it claimed.

Mortenson has previously denied any wrongdoing, though he has admitted some of the events in his "Three Cups of Tea" were compressed over different periods of time. Since then, he has declined to comment on the allegations and later in the spring underwent open-heart surgery.

In their response filed Friday with the U.S. District Court in Missoula, Kauffman and Maclay never explicitly say that all the events in Mortenson wrote about in the books are true.

They say the lawsuit should be thrown out because the plaintiffs can't identify any false statements or misrepresentations in his books.

Also, the plaintiffs can't say that all 4 million people bought the books for the same reason, something they need to prove to turn their claim into a class-action lawsuit, Mortenson's attorneys argue. Why someone buys a book is different from person to person, and may not be the same reason why the plaintiffs bought theirs, they said.

"They cannot demonstrate that an identifiable group of people has experienced any wrongdoing, let alone the same wrongdoing," the document says.

A hearing in the case has been scheduled for next month in Missoula.

Faster Way to Treat Partners of Women With STDs Urged: Experts (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Aug. 25 (HealthDay News) -- When a woman is diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, her doctor should be able to pass along antibiotics to her male partner without examining him, to cut both partners' odds of re-infection, experts say.

The new physician guideline was issued this week by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the nation's largest group representing ob/gyns.

In a new committee opinion, the ACOG panel of experts stated that doctors who diagnose their female patients with these infections should pass along a prescription for antibiotics to the male partner -- a practice called "expedited partner therapy."

"Evidence indicates that [this type of approach] can decrease re-infection rates" compared to the more standard practice of simply referring the patient's partner for examination and treatment, Dr. Diane F. Merritt, chair of ACOG's Committee on Adolescent Health Care, said in a news release from the college.

"Of course, it's preferable that a physician examine a patient in-person before prescribing medication," she added, but the benefits of the expedited response -- in getting otherwise reluctant partners to get treated -- probably outweigh the risks.

Although they are the two most commonly reported sexually transmitted infections in the United States, chlamydia and gonorrhea often cause only vague symptoms, and some women may not have any symptoms at all. As a result, the re-infection rates for these conditions are high. For example, ACOG noted the 12-month re-infection rate of chlamydia among teens and young women is as high as 26 percent. Untreated male sexual partners, the experts added, are often to blame.

Many people who have a sexually transmitted infection are not aware of it and pass it to their partners, added Merritt. Left undiagnosed and untreated, these infections "can cause scarring and damage a woman's ability to become pregnant when she's ready to have a baby," Merritt said. "Fortunately, chlamydia and gonorrhea can be quickly diagnosed with a simple urine test and treated with a short course of antibiotics. "

U.S. doctors can only legally prescribe antibiotics to people who are not their patients in 27 states. Rules governing the practice are unclear in 15 states, and non-patient prescriptions are prohibited in 8 states. The ACOG panel concluded that physicians in these states should push for the enactment of laws clearly supporting the practice to help curb rates of re-infection with sexually transmitted diseases.

No charges filed in scuffle between Wisconsin judges (Reuters)

MADISON (Reuters) ? No charges will be filed against Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser over allegations he choked a colleague in June as the court considered a lawsuit challenging a controversial anti-union measure, a special prosecutor said on Thursday.

Justice Ann Walsh Bradley had accused Prosser of choking her as the court deliberated on a legal challenge to Republican-backed curbs to collective bargaining by state workers.

Sauk County District Attorney Patricia Barrett, appointed to investigate the charges, said on Thursday she had reviewed investigators' reports and decided charges were not warranted against either Walsh Bradley or Prosser.

"After a complete review of the documents and photos, listening to the audio interview and meeting with (Dane County) Detective Hansen, I have determined that no criminal charges will be filed against either Justice Bradley or Justice Prosser for the incident on June 13, 2011," Barrett wrote to Dane County Judge William Foust and District Attorney Ismael Ozanne.

Media reports at the time said witnesses had given different accounts of who attacked whom.

Russian space ship fails to reach orbit

MOSCOW?? An unmanned Russian supply ship bound for the International Space Station failed to reach its planned orbit Wednesday, and pieces of it fell in Siberia amid a thunderous explosion, officials said.

A brief statement from Roscosmos, Russia's space agency, did not specify whether the Progress supply ship that was launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan had been lost.

But the state news agency RIA Novosti quoted Alexander Borisov, head of a the Choisky region in Russia's Altai province, as saying pieces of the craft fell in his area some 900 miles northeast of the launch site.

"The explosion was so strong that for 100 kilometers (60 miles) glass almost flew out of the windows," he was quoted as saying. Borisov said there were no immediate reports of casualties.

NBC News space analyst James Oberg, who spent 22 years at NASA's Johnson Space Center as a Mission Control operator and an orbital designer, said Borisov described the region as an inhabited agricultural (orchard) area, but since it's remote, and night had fallen, he had no information on damage or casualties. He didn't expect to get that information until tomorrow.

Oberg said this region has experienced the falls of Russian rocket fragments for decades and is very sensitive to chemical pollution and other health hazards. Unburned propellant in the third stage, and a ton of hypergolic propellant in the cargo ship, could indeed make a respectable explosion, either on impact or after being ignited high in the air.

Other fallen Russian rockets have made impressive craters when they've fallen, but so far, nobody is known to have been hurt or killed in this incident.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry and Roscosmos officials could not be reached for comment.

According to Oberg, one source said that data in the Russian Federation rocket-space branch RF shows the divergence of space truck from the orbit occurred because it did not have time to collect the necessary orbital speed.

The source stressed that the cargo ship at 325 seconds was not separated from the third step of carrier rocket "Soyuz." After this, having partially burnt in the dense layers of the atmosphere, the unit fell in the Altai mountains.

The space agency statement confirmed the third stage of the rocket firing the ship into space had failed at 325 seconds into the launch.

The ship was carrying more than 2.5 tons of supplies, including oxygen, food and fuel. Since the ending of the U.S. space shuttle program this summer, Russian spaceships are a main supply link to the space station.

There are six astronauts aboard the International Space Station, which orbits 220 miles above the Earth. They are Russians Andrei Borisenko, Alexander Samokuyayev and Sergei Volkov, Americans Michael Fossum and Ronald Garan and Satoshi Furukawa of Japan.

"The supplies aboard the space station are actually pretty fat" after the resupply mission by space shuttle Atlantis in July, NASA spokesman Kelly Humphries said from Houston. "So we don't anticipate any immediate impact to the crew."

Humphries stressed that NASA was waiting to get more details from Russian space officials on what actually happened.

The Interfax news agency cited a Russian space analyst, Sergei Puzanov, as saying the space station had supplies already aboard that could last two to three months and "the situation with the loss of the Progress cannot be called critical."

In July of 2010, a Progress supply ship failed in its first automatic docking attempt due to equipment malfunction, but was connected with the orbiting laboratory two days later.

Did a US version of the Galaxy S II sneak into a Samsung promo video? (Digital Trends)

Much like Apple?s next iPhone there are several rumors surrounding when Samsung?s Galaxy S II coming to the United States. In a teaser video posted on Samsung?s youtube channel informs viewers that the Galaxy S II will be a big deal in the states. That really isn?t a bold claim seeing as the Galaxy S II is one of the fastest selling Android phones of all time, even before launching in the United States. Samsung?s use of the phrase, ?Big in? could be a nod at the rumored 4.5inch display.? In a possible misstep by Samsung there appears to be an image of a US version of the Galaxy S II at the very end of the video.? Seeing as there will most likely at least four versions of the Galaxy S II available in the states we aren?t sure which version it is.

Throughout the video there is what appears to be a generic Galaxy S II phone on display. The very visible physical middle button is a dead give-away that the phone is the Galaxy S II currently available in other areas of the world. At the end of the video there is a still image of a phone with phone with four touch sensitive buttons along the bottom of the phone, and no physical button.? If you blink you will miss it.

The front of the phone looks like the leaked image of an AT&T version of the Galaxy S II. With the side profile visible the phone looks too thin to hide a slide out keyboard like the picture we have seen of AT&T?s model. It is possible that the phone is T-Mobile?s Hercules which is said to sport a 4.5inch screen.? We do not have enough information on either the Sprint or Verizon versions to include them in our speculations.

We don?t know what phone we see in the video, but we are excited. With the latest rumors pointing to an October launch it is a pretty safe bet that we will hear a few more rumors before any of the phones actually launch.

Pirates attack 2nd tanker after Indian ship hijacked (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? A chemical oil tanker foiled a hijack attempt by pirates near the Omani port of Salalah on Sunday, a day after a tanker and crew were snatched from inside the port in front of the coast guard.

"Pirates in a skiff chased and fired upon a chemical tanker," according to the International Maritime Bureau's anti-crime arm. "The pirates made several attempts to board the tanker and finally aborted the attack due to the evasive manoeuvres made by the tanker."

On Saturday, pirates successfully seized the empty MV Fairchem Bogey chemical oil tanker from its anchorage at the port in the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, taking 21 Indian crew members hostage and heading south to Somalia, Mumbai-based Anglo Eastern Ship Management said.

"We can now confirm that the Fairchem Bogey is now in Somali waters," the tanker manager said in a statement.

"The Master has been in contact with us, reconfirming safety of the crew. We are still waiting to make first contact with the hijackers."

Anglo-Eastern said the Omani Coast Guard approached the vessel shortly after it was seized from its anchorage in the port but backed off when the pirates warned that the captured crew might be harmed.

The Bogey, which had armed guards on board when it sailed through the Gulf of Aden on its way to unload at the Saudi port of Al Jubail on Aug. 18, was unprotected when it was taken on Aug. 21 after dropping the security team off in the Omani capital Muscat on Aug. 10, the company said

Several oil tankers have been attacked in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden, with their valuable cargoes being used by pirates to demand ransoms.

Vacation, Part I ? Gates Family Blog

I just realized I never published my vacation posts! Let?s see, when was vacation? Oh yeah, end of June. A little late, Brianne?

We had a really nice week off seeing both sides of the family, first my brother and his family near State College, and then Tim?s family out in the Pittsburgh area. Due to the face that I have a bazillion photos, I will divide these posts into two parts.

So first up was State College/Hollidaysburg. It started with lunch and a stroll around Penn State?s?campus. So many wonderful memories come flooding back when walking around my old stomping grounds. From there, I met up with some PSU friends at a baby shower for another close college friend. It is always exciting to see old friends and meet their growing families. I also found out at this baby shower that my brother and sister-in-law are expecting baby #4 in January! So exciting!

We spent the next 4 days with Sean?s family and my dad along with Emily?s parents who were so gracious to let us stay at their beautiful home. The boys shared many giggles playing outside and wrestling indoors. We hiked at Shaver?s Creek, picked berries (right on their property!), visited an Amish flea market, went swimming at Greenwood Furnace, ate smores by the fire? it was the perfect blend of exploring and relaxing.
