Genetic defect causing fragile X-related disorders more common than thought

Dec. 20, 2012 ? A single genetic defect on the X chromosome that can result in a wide array of conditions -- from learning and emotional difficulties to primary ovarian insufficiency in women and tremors in middle-aged men -- occurs at a much greater frequency than previously thought, research led by the UC Davis MIND Institute has found.

The research is based on the first large-scale, multi-center newborn screening effort for the defect in the United States, conducted in a group of more than 14,200 male and female infants at three research university medical centers piloting a new infant screening test developed at UC Davis.

The study, "FMR1 CGG Allele Size and Prevalence Ascertained Through Newborn Screening in the United States," was led by Flora Tassone, professor-in-residence in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, and was conducted using blood spots obtained from infant heel pricks as part of the normal newborn genetic screening process. It is published online Dec. 20 in the journal Genome Medicine.

The investigators examined the prevalence of expanded alleles of the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene. Defects in FMR1 cause conditions as diverse as fragile X syndrome -- the leading cause of intellectual disability and the leading known single-gene cause of autism -- and a Parkinson's disease-like condition called fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, or FXTAS. The term "fragile X" is used because of the altered appearance of the X chromosome among sufferers from the conditions.

"This study demonstrates that there is a higher frequency of mutations of the FMR1 gene across racial and ethnic groups than previously believed," said Randi Hagerman, medical director of the UC Davis MIND Institute and one of the world's leading experts on fragile X-related conditions. "It also demonstrates that newborn screening for fragile X mutations is technically feasible in a large-scale setting using the blood spot technique developed by Dr. Tassone."

The degree of disability from defects in FMR1 depends upon the number of repetitions of the sequence of the proteins cytosine-guanine-guanine (CGG) in the promoter region of the gene. The range of repeats in normal individuals is between six and 40. CGG repeats greater than 200 cause what is called the full mutation and fragile X syndrome. Fewer repeats -- in the range of 55 to 200 -- result in a variation called a premutation.

The current study found the estimated prevalence of the premutation to be 1 in 200 females, a finding somewhat greater than earlier estimates. However, it estimates the prevalence among males to be 1 in 400 -- double what had previously been reported. The researchers said that the sample size in the current study was not great enough to estimate the true prevalence of the full fragile X mutation, currently estimated at between 1 in 2,500 and 1 in 8,000 females and 1 in 5,000 males.

While most people with the premutation appear normal, some individuals can have mild difficulties in childhood, such as such as learning problems or emotional difficulties including social anxiety and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), said Hagerman, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Individuals with the premutation also can suffer from FXTAS, which causes debilitating tremors, balance problems and dementia primarily in older men, and premature ovarian insufficiency in women.

Tassone, a researcher affiliated with the MIND Institute, is one of the world's leading experts on screening and identification of the FMR1 mutation. Her polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based test used in the current study was described in January 2008 in the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics.

"This study shows that newborn screening for the FMR1 mutation is technically possible on a large scale," Tassone said. "However, the screening will identify far more carrier and gray-zone infants than those with a full fragile X mutation. As we now know that there may be clinical involvement with these individuals, such as FXTAS, we need to better understand the impact of identifying these mutations on families before widespread newborn screening can be instituted."

Hagerman said that the study is important because early intervention can be helpful for children with these mutations who experience developmental problems. In addition, a baby who is positive for the mutation will have other family members who also carry mutations. Genetic counseling is essential for the family members, in addition to treatment for the medical or psychiatric problems associated with the premutation or full mutation, she said.

NFL Playoff Picture 2012: Current Playoff Teams Who Won't Make the Postseason

Well this is anti-climactic.

13 weeks into the NFL season, and there's not a lot of mathematical intrigue surrounding the playoff picture. Four?division leaders have already clinched, and two more hold leads of over one game.

As far as the Wild Card is concerned, it's not as up-for-grabs as it has been in recent years. There are hosts of teams hovering around the five- and six-win mark, but most of them don't appear serious about making a playoff push.

But if you dig a little deeper, there are a few current playoff teams who shouldn't get too comfortable with their current position.

Let's take a closer look at two teams who could be kicking themselves come?January:

?

Indianapolis Colts

People are talking like the Colts have already clinched a playoff berth. Which I get. They have a one-game lead over Cincinnati, who plays at Dallas this weekend. If the Colts beat Tennessee at home, and the Bengals lose to the Cowboys, they'll have a two-game buffer in the AFC Wild Card hunt.

I just don't think that's how it'll shake out.

FootballOutsiders.com??the most widely respected source of advanced football stats??has the Colts 27th in their Week 14 rankings.

Twenty-seventh.

That's below the likes of Cleveland, Arizona and San Diego. For God's sake, it's below the Jets!

Football Outsiders gives the Colts a 69.1 percent chance at making the postseason; the Bengals have a 58.1 percent chance. If either Cincinnati or Tennessee win this weekend, those number could be equal.

Especially considering the Colts still have to play Houston twice.

Pittsburgh, who's tied with Cincy (and still has to play a home game against them) is obviously at risk of dropping out too. But the numbers, along with their relatively easy schedule, suggest they'll be okay.

The same can't be said in Indy.

?

Chicago Bears

Yes, Chicago has the top-ranked defense in the NFL. And sure, they have a two-game lead on Washington and Dallas.

They're still in jeopardy of blowing a playoff berth for the second straight season.

Chicago's remaining schedule is anything but a gimme. They play at Minnesota this weekend, then host Green Bay in Week 15. Those are two very loseable games.

After that come road games with Arizona and Detroit, which seem innocuous at first, but could actually be traps for the Bears. Arizona has a top-five defense and Detroit has a top-10 offense. Units that good, on their home turf, are always a threat.

Especially with Brian Urlacher out for the rest of the regular season.

Washington, meanwhile, has one of the easiest remaining schedules in the NFL. Should they get by Baltimore at home this weekend, they'd only need to win at Philly, at Cleveland and vs. Dallas to go 10-6.

Exactly where the Bears would be if they finish 2-2.

Chicago and Washington are headed in opposite directions: The Bears have lost three of four, while the 'Skins have won three straight.

Don't be surprised if we wake up one morning and see that one ship has passed the other.

Green chemistry: Waste from palm oil extraction can be converted into useful sugar

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Palm oil extraction annually produces approximately 13 million tons of waste plant matter. Some of this by-product, known as empty fruit bunch (EFB), is currently incinerated to produce heat and electricity to run palm oil mills, but it is now on the path to a sweeter use. By adapting and optimizing an established technique to convert sugarcane bagasse and corn stover to the useful sugar xylose, a research team in Singapore, led by Jin Chuan Wu from the A*STAR Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences, has experimentally extracted high yields of xylose from EFB1.

EFB contains xylan, which is a carbohydrate made up of units of xylose. Xylan is very susceptible to being broken down to these individual sugar molecules in the presence of mild acid. Known as hydrolysis, this process is not widely applied to EFB -- despite its well-established use for converting sugarcane bagasse and corn stover -- because of difficulties in making it cost effective. The key to Wu and his team's success was the combination of acids they selected for hydrolyzing EFB: sulfuric (H2SO4) and phosphoric acid (H3PO4). "The combined use of H2SO4 and H3PO4 has a synergistic effect in improving sugar yields," explains Wu.

Since the elements sulfur and phosphorus are essential for the fermentation of xylose using microbes, the researchers' combination of acids will play a fundamental role in the further conversion of xylose into other useful chemicals, such as the sugar substitute xylitol, lactic acid and ethanol. After hydrolysis and neutralization, these acid components can be used directly in a microbial fermentation. Hydrolysis requires the levels of these elements to be low, with higher levels being detrimental. In previous EFB hydrolysis techniques, higher concentrations of acids were used, but the levels of sulfur and phosphorus were too high for the microbial fermentation stage.

After discerning the right combination of mild acids, Wu and his team used computer modeling followed by supporting experiments to find the optimal conditions for hydrolysis. They obtained xylose yields of 80-90%. The conditions they optimized included the concentrations of the two acids, the reaction temperature, the dilution of the solution and the size of the EFB particles.

"Next, we will convert the sugars into lactic acids by microbial fermentation using lactic acid bacteria," explains Wu. This lactic acid will be used for producing polylactic acid: a renewable and completely biodegradable biopolymer, that he says is stable at high temperatures and has broad applications.

The A*STAR-affiliated researchers contributing to this research are from the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences

BPO Articles: Making a Career in Outsourcing - BPO.biz

Outsourcing as an industry is rapidly coming of age. The February 2005 issue of Harvard Business Review noted the following for Outsourcing: ?Outsourcing has become strategic - yet many executives remain unprepared. A new era of capability sourcing will trigger organizational redesign and a new set of managerial skills.? The number of companies providing outsourcing services is increasing rapidly, methodologies and procedures are maturing fast, and more and more people are hopping on to the outsourcing bandwagon.

An important fallout of this maturing of the industry is that one can now consider making a career in outsourcing seriously. While call centre or operational jobs are available aplenty, not many middle level managers or highly qualified people from the more traditional banking, accounting or other industries are willing to take them up. Part of this is because outsourcing is often considered synonymous with call centers, due to early growth and publicity in that area. However, changes in the industry are opening doors for everyone. Consider these significant changes, and how they are throwing up new opportunities.

Expansion of the range of services provided

Outsourcing is not limited to call centers or medical transcription anymore. As the industry matures, the value of services provided is also increasing. Now, there are companies doing equity research, hedge fund accounting, advance scientific research, and many more specialized activities. For example, Intel and GE are doing high end scientific research, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley are involved in Equity research, McKinsey is sourcing consulting support - the examples are numerous and increasing every day. Now one can work for the best names and the area of choice, thanks to outsourcing.

Demand for Specialization

As companies expand both in employee strength and range of services provides, they need experts in various fields. Some of the highly specialized career options now available are:

  • Transition managers - these are experts in Project Management. The role of transition managers is to help migration of the function from overseas locations to the offshore location. This involves understanding the existing process, determining the best migration methodology and overseeing the migration project.

  • Relationship Managers - This is typically a middle/ senior management role in any outsourcing company. These managers are the single point of contact for the client, and their responsibilities sometimes span across teams and departments.

  • Six Sigma and Process Re-engineering experts - One of the most significant non-cost benefits of outsourcing is the opportunity to re-engineer the process - thereby improving the process and/ or deriving further cost saves. By undertaking various projects, Six Sigma and Process re-engineering experts play the key role in this.

DIY Bicycle-Powered Machine Reclaims Yarn from Sweaters

DIY Bicycle-Powered Machine Reclaims Yarn from SweatersIf you're a knitter trying to stick to a budget you can build a relatively simple machine to reclaim yarn from sweaters using a bicycle wheel and chain and a tea kettle.

Design weblog PSFK showcases how Kingston University student Imogen Hedges created her "un-knitting machine" based on pedaling power from bicycles. The un-knitter sits in a chair pedaling which pulls yarn from a sweater, running the fiber through a steaming kettle to make it easier to handle before being collected on a spindle on the bicycle's wheel. If you have an extra bicycle wheel and gearing you could make your own with a bit of woodwork.

With this device knitters can buy cheap sweaters from thrift stores and reclaim the yarn. Seems like a good way to make a conceivably expensive hobby a bit more frugal.

Guest Post: Getting Schooled on Developing the Best Games for ...

Editor?s note: The following guest post was written by?Peter Hofstede, the Game Development Director at Spil Games. Spil is billed as the largest independent online gaming platform. As the social games market grows more crowded, developers find themselves competing more and more for audience share. One group that hasn?t been targeted by most studios are in the tween demographic, an audience that Spil?s found success with via its Girls Go Games label. In this article, Hofstede offers advice on how to find success with tweens.

There are over 80 million social games played each day, yet only 15 percent of these games are played more than once by a user. We?re seeing a high level of abandonment in the social gaming space, but keep in mind that many of these games are developed for mass audiences? where it?s very difficult to please everyone. At Spil Games, we prefer to operate in a world where tailoring gaming experiences to niche audiences is an ideal way to reach an engaged consumer base and convert them into loyal users.

Thinking specifically about tween girls, teenage boys or even parents looking to play online games with their kids, developing games for niche audiences can provide a major growth opportunity. If fact, 91 percent of kids are gamers ? we know the market is there ? it?s simply a matter harnessing these consumers to get them to play your game. When it comes to success, it is crucial for developers to incorporate a user-centered design approach to appeal to niche audiences? unique interests and behaviors. Getting it right doesn?t require a PhD in psychology, and while it certainly couldn?t hurt, there are several different tactics to understanding the basics throughout the game development process.

I think of it as a three-step design approach:

1. Understand the psychological foundations of the audience for which you are developing.

2. Use focus groups to double-check your findings

3. Validate your game by testing it on real users.

Let?s dive deeper ?

I. Open your Textbooks: Psych 101

Before you can get into your audiences? hands, first things first: Get inside their heads. Specific to the teen and tween demographic, it?s essential to know the basic psychology behind these players so that they will find your game content engaging. In other words: Don?t trust your own ?grown up? intuition. The psychology behind gameplay is fascinating to read up on. The incorporation of psychological phenomena, such as a positive feedback loop (continuing an action or behavior because of the reoccurring positive outcome,) for example, has been shown to influence gaming behavior by extending average length of play and recurring gameplay.

It is also important to examine gender differences when developing games to niche audiences. We find that there are many game components that motivate kids in general, but we also see that boys and girls tend to be motivated by different aspects of games, especially for players that fall between the ages of 6-12. For example, younger teenage boys prefer games that are extreme, with winners and losers, and an overtly competitive component where they can clearly show off results.

Tween girls like competition as well, but are also interested in non-competitive gameplay that helps them to develop self-esteem and feelings of self-worth. Tween girls are also at an age where they are eager to act out different roles they see exhibited in their daily lives. Understanding that they see their daily role models (parents, older siblings, etc.) duties like feeding household pets and being held accountable for a fulltime job could all translate into successful online game themes.

II. Pop Quiz: Implementing Checklists and Focus Groups in Game Creation

Of course, not everything can be learned from textbooks, or rather, initial psychological or behavioral research. It is just as important to incorporate a human component to the development process by taking a look at focus group reactions, survey findings and direct feedback from niche audiences into making a game as awesome as possible.

In this phase of the game development process, think of your gamers as co-developers, aiding you in fully baking out the perfect game. Surveys and focus groups are the perfect way to test out a brand new game or character and see a small-scale perspective of how your audience will react.

A great focus group example is when we were tasked to rebrand and update a character in one of our staple franchises. The goal was to modernize the female chef character of a cooking game. After several focus groups in Europe, working with hundreds of tween gamers and their parents to determine their thoughts and reactions to the chef character, we ended up fully revamping her wardrobe, hair and makeup to appeal to these tween girls and their parents.

III. Physical Education: Designing User-Interface around Niche Audience?s Anatomy

In phase three of the game development process, that is, having real gamers play completed games in the lab, we have found an essential aspect of developing a game is all too easily forgotten: audience specific usability issues. For instance, with little gamers come little fingers. As a developer, we need to make sure that we are not only creating games kids will love, but also making sure that they can actually play them. The size of these gamers? hands and fingers directly impact the way they type, hold a mouse and play games on a smartphone or ? minor details which can ultimately impact whether a kid loves your game, or wants to throw their dad?s smartphone out the car window!

Specifically, our usability tests reveal several findings. One demonstrated younger kids find holding a tablet device to be very difficult for their little hands. In an attempt to grasp the tablet, the children often accidentally touch the screen with their fingers, which impacts the game controls. Developers can implement more forgiving touch systems to combat this issue, for example by placing the finger closest to a button or active region in control and have all other finger pressure ignored.

Graduation:

We are witnessing a very exciting time for the gaming space but for a developer to survive in this highly populated world, it is essential to take the necessary steps to understand audience behavior. Understanding specific audience preferences and behavior can not only instill confidence in a game?s success post-development, but also help developers allocate resources appropriately throughout the entire process. Developers can use data from focus groups and usability tests to prioritize what to spend the most time on during the creation process. There?s no need to spend hours refining certain animation details if you know your target audience cares more about the potential ways they can customize the game. There are plenty of hit games yet to be developed, we just need to make sure to hone in on the most applicable aspects to incorporate, so that awesome games can reach audiences effectively and start earning return.

Researchers have pieced together new genetic clues to the arthritis ...

Researchers have pieced together new genetic clues to the arthritis puzzle in a study that brings potential treatments closer to reality and could also provide insights into why more women than men succumb to the disabling condition. Rheumatoid arthritis - which affects more than 400,000 people in the UK and about 1% of the world's population - is a complicated disease: lifestyle and environmental factors, such as smoking, diet, pregnancy and infection are thought to play a role, but it is also known that a person's genetic makeup influences their susceptibility to the condition...

Headhunter Tells Us Which Jobs Will Be Huge In 2013 - Business ...

With the presidential elections over, companies now have a better idea of how to move forward with their hiring plans.?

So where will be the jobs be?

Geoffrey Hoffmann, CEO of?DHR International ? a recruiting firm responsible for placing?C-level executives ? shares with us his employment projections for the coming year.

"My views aren't that of an economist, but I do get a sense from the dialogue that we have with senior leaders," Hoffmann told us. "Some industries are more well-positioned than others."

Here's Hoffman's projections:

1. Healthcare

"There was some uncertainty before the election if the healthcare legislation will be appealed or not,"?Hoffmann said. "But now a lot of healthcare companies and hospitals know what they need to do to plan."

Therefore, hiring is expected to rise.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare and social assistance industry is expected to generate the "largest number of jobs, 5.6 million, at an annual rate of 3.0 percent" between now to 2020.?

2. Technology

Rapid growth in mobile technology has made the?engineering industry highly valuable?? and this trend isn't ending any time soon.?

The?Bureau of Labor Statistics?reports that jobs for?software engineers are projected to increase by 30 percent from 2010 to 2020. This is the faster than the average for all occupations.?

3. E-commerce

As the mobile technology industry continues to grow, it's becoming easier for consumers to purchase items through their mobile devices. Therefore, e-commerce startups are launching at a rapid rate, according to?Sutanuka Ghosal & Peerzada Abrar at The Economic Times.

"Online sales are becoming a more significant portion of total revenue and, to handle demand, retailers are building more robust websites, which are accessible through many channels," said a release by PRWeb.?"Overall hiring demand for e-commerce professionals has increased 9 percent compared to the same one-month period in 2011 and 40 percent versus October of 2010."

The cities where e-commerce professionals are most in demand are Chicago,?New York, Seattle, San Francisco, and Boston.

4. Life Sciences

"Pharmaceutical companies are looking at developing markets to increase and they're?putting a lot of investment dollars into R&D," Hoffmann told us. "We see a lot of attention in the fourth quarter [2012] and I don?t see it letting up next year."

5. Financial services

"Things have stabilized in banking sectors and banks are back in business ? for the most part ? in making loans," Hoffmann said. "Community banks aren?t able to compete anymore."

Hoffman told us that the specific sectors that will experience hiring growth in 2013 are?commercial banking and asset management.

"Everyone's looking for advice, bond markets are yielding very little returns and?capital markets are very challenging."

Myanmar frees political prisoners on day of historic Obama visit

http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/19/us-myanmar-prisoners-idUSBRE8AI05520121119

(Reuters) ? Myanmar?s government began releasing dozens of political prisoners on Monday as Barack Obama arrived for the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to the former dictatorship

Sixty-six prisoners were scheduled to be freed, two-thirds of them dissidents, according to prison officials and activists.

They included prominent figures such as Myint Aye, a senior Prison Department official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

A third of those released were former military intelligence personnel who fell afoul of the junta, according to the 88 Generation Students political group.

Myint Aye is arguably the most prominent dissident left in Myanmar?s gulag. He was one of dozens of activists arrested on what Amnesty International says were trumped-up charges and convicted in secret courts on flimsy evidence or confessions extracted under torture.

A former member of Aung San Suu Kyi?s National League for Democracy party, he was arrested for the ninth time in August 2008 for his alleged role in the bombing of an office belonging to a junta-backed political organization.

Why Apple's stock fell so hard

FORTUNE -- Apple's (AAPL) share price briefly touched $505.75 in Thursday's trading -- $200 (28.3%) off its mid-September high.

We needn't spell out here all the reasons that have been put forward over the past two months for why the stock was due for a fall. There's a whole literature of Apple FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) -- often delivered in the form of top 10 lists -- to explain the stock's steady retrenchment to a share price it hadn't seen since February.

Which is why I was particularly interested in two theories that emerged Friday.

The first came in the form of a rumor spread by Doug Kass, the author of one of the most famous of those top 10 lists. (See Meet one of the guys.) He tweeted Friday that Apple was getting?clobbered by hedge funds hit with big margin calls. The whole market was being driven down by fiscal cliff fears, but the Apple shares in their portfolio -- even at their depressed valuation -- could still be sold at a profit, so that's where hedge fund managers turned to raise cash.

The second theory was laid out in Seeking Alpha by Economic Weather Station's Jason Schwarz, whom I quote periodically as the author of the Apple slingshot theory:

"If you can keep a good stock down then you are able to load up for the ride back up. It's like a slingshot -- the harder you pull, the more propulsion you generate." ?--?Apple: Seven reasons shorts love it

The slingshot, he wrote Friday, is often misunderstood as being caused by negative articles about Apple in the media. Quite the opposite, he says. It's caused by mutual fund managers rebalancing a stock they've loved too much.

I'll let Jason tell the story:

Suppose you were a mutual fund manager and your strategic models allowed for a maximum 8% allocation in any individual stock. What would have happened to your Apple holdings in 2012? As of September 21st, Apple was up 74.9% year-to-date. Apple allocations at the largest mutual funds had grown to between 13% and 15% of total holdings with the fiscal year end approaching on October 31st. Because of Apple's strength, because it was such an outlier when compared to the rest of the market, these money managers were forced to re-balance their portfolios in order to comply with their risk models. The Apple slingshots, or in other words the deeper than unexpected selloffs, are caused by systematic institutional re-balancing. This is the unintended consequence of Apple's status as the most widely held stock of most hedge funds, indexes, pension funds and mutual funds. Apple's slingshot selloffs occur because of its strength, not because of its weakness. Apple is an outlier.

As you contemplate your mortality as an investor with Apple in the low $500's, solace will replace your frustration when you realize that those institutional funds who sold Apple back to 8% portfolio allocations are now underweight Apple because of the fiscal cliff selloff pressure that Apple has endured since October 31st. Because the fiscal cliff selloff occurred at the end of institutional re-balancing,?it?has caused this particular selloff to be especially deep. However, as confidence grows that the fiscal cliff will be resolved, Apple finds itself in a favorable supply/demand stock scenario for the first time since July 26th. The next run is coming and the stock will skyrocket just as it has during the last 10 slingshots because every money manager on Wall Street trusts Apple's fundamental growth story and they know that maxing out Apple allocations is key to outperforming their index. This slingshot phenomenon will continue to play itself out for as long as Apple occupies the pole position as market leader.

Makes sense to me. And it could explain why Apple, after hitting that nine-month low Friday, bounced nearly $22 to close at $527.68.

Schwarz's piece is called?Apple's Institutional Slingshot: Rational Explanation Of Irrational Stock Action.

95% Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel

All Critics (55) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (52) | Rotten (3)

Her life, and her work, transcended what we think of as "fashion." Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel celebrates a unique and uniquely determined woman.

Many people remember some of Diana Vreeland's famous pronouncements ("I adore pink! It is the navy blue of India!") but few remember actually hearing her speak. The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel takes care of that.

For fashionphiles and pop culture vultures, there's much to devour.

Diana Vreeland is both history lesson and sentimental love letter to a fashion titan.

Legendary fashion editor Diana Vreeland was the consummate dreamer, a romantic who never looked back and propelled society forward.

A feast for fashion-history buffs and anyone who applauds unstoppable eccentricity.

The filmmakers have done a fine job corralling so many fantastic tales from Vreeland's life.

"Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel" is an intriguing portrait of a true original; you only wish the movie had half the color and verve of its subject.

A lively movie, and in the case of its appearance-obsessed subject, it feels right that all it does is skim the surface.

[Vreeland's] influence on twentieth-century culture was large, and it's celebrated here with affection, dedication and skill--but very little critical detachment.

Though unwilling to dig too deeply into what seems an imperfect private life, it still serves as a splendid introduction to a unique personality.

A poignant portrait of an inveterate iconoclast who couldn't help but push the envelope.

[A] warm portrait of the world's first true fashion maven.

It can be hard to keep up at points -- not with the plot, but with the amount of inspiration that Diana can still strew over an audience.

As a biographical documentary, Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel is complete and satisfying. As a leading character, Mrs. Vreeland is entirely entertaining.

Vreeland's attention to detail, her love of new and exciting images, her devotion to and ability to identify, that ethereal thing called style, come across loudly and clearly.

Simple Ways On How To Live Your Best Life Now - Empower Network

The first, and scariest, step in any self-improvement program is admitting that you?re falling short of being the person you want to be, or of achieving what you want to achieve. Follow these handy tips for ideas to get you started on the self-improvement path.

Choose someone you admire to assist you with your goals and accountability in personal development. Behind every champion, there is a coach that helps serve as a mentor. Having this type of person around is one key to being successful. There always needs to be someone who is willing to show new members exactly how things are done and to provide them with the information necessary to achieve success. Sharing knowledge can helping others realize and achieve their goals is crucial. Behind every successful person are the people who taught them and encouraged them along the way.

TIP! Watch your progress by organizing yourself. By taking a large goal and breaking it down to more manageable segments, you will see that completing your goals has become easier.

Personal development goals that improve your health will improve many other areas of your life. Good health simply makes your whole life go better. A healthy lifestyle can increase your general health so that you save time and the expense of frequent doctor visits. It should be a priority to become more healthy.

Check out a few popular books on developmental techniques that you find particularly interesting. Well written books on self improvement will always spark new ideas and give suggestions on altering your life. Try to pick a volume that has already been well-received by others because poorly done books in this category are fairly common.

When you feel anger start to boil over, stop before you react and count to ten. Breathe deeply and try to relax. Stay calm and say only what needs to be said.

TIP! Look for the things you admire or appreciate about others and give them compliments. You can reverse the process, though.

Prepare for emergency expenses. Too often, unexpected expenses are put on credit cards, which only adds interest to the debt and increases your burden. However, you can protect yourself from this happening by depositing a few dollars into a savings account each week. You will be surprised at how quickly your emergency fund will increase. That fund can aid in both the long term and short term as debt goes down.

Take the time to read what has helped others to be who they want to be. The most obvious way to avoid pitfalls in both career and personal matters is to know what those pitfalls are and find out how other people avoided them. Finding out how other people did things will make your own journey toward success that much easier.

Getting healthy is a major factor of self improvement. In order to maintain a healthy body, you have to stay motivated to practice healthy eating habits and exercise. When you put your health first, you are going to feel better in all areas of your life.

TIP! Try to determine what things matter most in your life and devote your attention to them. Personal development involves focusing on the important things in life while allowing negativity and unimportant matters to drift past.

No matter what, you must adhere to one rule. You need to participate in life and not watch from the sidelines. Observing instead of doing causes you to appear dead to most of the world.

One approach to self improvement is to view yourself as one who has not yet learned all there is to know. Realizing that you are but a small part of the bigger picture will potentially open your mind to attaining new insights. You will make dramatic progress in your self improvement once you accept that you still have a lot to learn and become eager to experience all the new things you can.

After trying some of the tips that interest you, chart your progress. Go ahead, relax, and take a break.

Cause Marketing: Why Being an Advocate in ... - ReachLocal Blog

Last updated 14 hours ago

Online marketing has enabled small businesses to reach more prospects and customers than ever before. But how can these platforms help you build the brand loyalty and repeat purchases you need to drive long-term success? Many businesses find success with cause marketing, or cause-related marketing, which allows them to create and build better relationships with consumers. What exactly is cause marketing, and how can you use it to help your business?

Understanding Cause Marketing and Its Benefits

According to Wikipedia, ?cause-related marketing refers to a type of marketing in the cooperative efforts of a "for profit" business and a?non-profit organization?for mutual benefit.? American Express coined the phrase in 1983 to describe its efforts to raise money for the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, in which it donated one cent to restoring the landmark every time someone used their card. This increased card usage by 28% and the number of new cardholders by 45%.

Cause marketing ties a company and its products and services to a charitable cause with the goal of boosting sales or overall image. Cause marketing can not only boost sales for SMBs, but also enhance brand loyalty and repeat purchases from existing clients. In fact, the ?Do Well Do Good Public Opinion Survey on Cause-Marketing found that 70% of consumers are willing to pay more for a product that supports a cause and 69% of consumers are willing to drive out of their way to purchase from a business that supports a cause that means a lot to them.

Choosing the Cause for your Marketing Strategy

Choosing the right cause for your cause-related marketing strategy is the first step to your success. To find the right cause for your business to publically support, it should relate to your brand. For example, if you?re a sports medical clinic, you could consider supporting a charity that provides sports equipment to underprivileged schools or free health clinics for local children?s sporting teams, so that your customers will immediately get the connection to your brand. Before you jump into collaborating with any organization, you can collect data about your consumers to learn what they value most. Once you have a short list of causes you?d like to support, ask your customers what they think with email surveys, in-store notecards, or face-to-face interactions to help you determine which cause would fit best with your business. Then, after determining the level of involvement with the cause, you should contact the organization to notify them about your wish to support their cause, and ask for permission to use their name, information and other materials in your promotion. This can also be good for you, as they might recognize your support and participation across their own Web presence.?

Promoting your Cause

Once you have permission to use your cause?s details, it?s time to promote your supporting efforts. Use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube to make your fans and followers of your brand?s involvement and encourage them to share the news. One idea is to create a specific campaign around your charity. For instance, you can create a campaign to donate 10% of your proceeds to your charity on the first Tuesday of every month. Create a Web page for your campaign, and then spread the word about your ?event? with a blog post, pictures, a short video about your cause, and other social posts. Promoting your campaign will increase awareness of your cause, boost customer loyalty, increase online word of mouth, and help drive more traffic to your business.

Boosting Your Online Reputation

Another benefit from cause marketing you may not have considered is the impact to your online reputation. Your business? online reputation, including reviews, posts, comments, likes, and more, can affect whether or not a consumer will do business with you, you can use cause marketing to improve your reputation online. For instance, you can ask fans and followers to ?like? and comment on posts about your charitable efforts as well as to share or retweet them with their networks, which can help more positive content show up in when someone searches for your business. Plus, supporting a cause that is important to your audience can increase customer loyalty and help you identify advocates for your business who are willing to promote your content and leave you positive reviews online.

Cause marketing is an excellent way for you to be a part of and give back to your local community. Plus, it?s a great strategy to consider when differentiating your brand from your competitors, both online and offline. With any marketing strategy, it?s important to create new, creative, and customized ideas for your brand that effectively grab the attention of your audience. Brainstorm ideas with your employees and find out what causes they feel fit best with your business.

Some conservatives voice Petraeus conspiracy theories

It's the soap opera that shocked official Washington and ensnared a previously squeaky clean CIA director at a time when he was supposed to play a role in the accounting for a possible security misstep in Libya.

We don't know all the facts of why the FBI started investigating David Petraeus' biographer and how it ultimately led to his resignation.

But a growing number of conservative commentators contend that the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus is more than simple amends made for a personal wrong.

Charles Krauthammer, the Fox News and Washington Post commentator, believes the Petraeus' sex scandal is linked to a closed briefing that he gave two days after the attack that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, in Benghazi, Libya.

Petraeus is set to speak about circumstances surrounding the tragedy again before a House committee on Friday and possibly at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, as well.

Petraeus' resignation from his post at the CIA in light of his extramarital affair raised the possibility that he would not testify. But on Wednesday morning, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., told ABC News Petraeus had agreed to do so.

Krauthammer said on Fox News Tuesday that ties he sees between what Petraeus' told the Congress in September and his fear for his future at the CIA make his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell important to the public.

"The reason that it's important is here's a man who knows the administration holds his fate in his hands, and he gives testimony completely at variance with what the Secretary of Defense had said the day before, at variance with what he heard from the station chief in Tripoli and with everything that we had heard," Krauthammer said. "Was he influenced by the fact he knew his fate was held by people in the administration at that time?"

Krauthammer's comments seemed to imply that the man who wrote the book on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq lied to the House Intelligence Committee to save his skin when he said that the attack was a spontaneous mob spurred by the film, "The Innocence of Muslims."

At the time of his briefings, no one in the White House was aware of the FBI investigation into Petraeus' relationship with Broadwell.

As ABC News' Martha Raddatz reported on "World News with Diane Sawyer," the FBI got involved around May or June tracing emails from Broadwell to Jill Kelley in Tampa, Fla., but President Obama was not informed about Petraeus' indiscretions until November

Former New Jersey Superior Court Judge Andrew Napolitano wrote an op-ed for the Washington Times Wednesday in which he said Petraeus was clearly forced to resign his post in an effort to keep him quiet.

"In the modern era, office-holders with forgiving spouses simply do not resign from powerful jobs because of a temporary, non-criminal, consensual adult sexual liaison, as the history of the FDR, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ and?Clinton?presidencies attest. So, why is?Gen. Petraeus?different?" Napolitano wrote. "Someone wants to silence him."

Napolitano offered no guesses as to what those pressuring Petraeus might be hoping to suppress.

Rudy deLeon, senior vice president for national security and international policy at the Center for American Progress, said the American people should allow Petraeus to "speak for himself."

"Anyone who knows Gen. Petraeus, and I've known him since my Pentagon days, knows that his integrity comes first, that he's not a political guy, and that being straightforward is what his considerable reputation has been based on," deLeon said.

In late October, Petraeus personally traveled to Libya to investigate the CIA personnel who were in Benghazi on the night of the attack.

Read more about that trip ?HERE.

On the night Petraeus first announced his resignation, Krauthammer said the affair would spur the mainstream media to dig deeper into what transpired in Benghazi.

"It will now become the hottest story around and you can be sure that even the mainstream papers, which did not show any interest whatsoever in this story up to and into the election, are going to get on it," Krauthammer said. "It will unravel."

Implications that Petraeus was covering for the White House play into a larger theory floating around conservative circles that Obama administration officials like Petraeus and U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice purposely misled the American people following the attack in Benghazi.

Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and John McCain, R-Ariz., told ABC's Jon Karl Wednesday that they would oppose Obama's hypothetical nomination of Rice to Secretary of State, with Graham saying he didn't "trust her."

President Obama responded to this opposition Wednesday at his first press conference since taking reelection, defending the U.N. ambassador.

"She made an appearance at the request of the White House in which she gave her best understanding of the intelligence that had been provided to her," Obama said. "If Sen. McCain and Sen. Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me."

Dot Earth Blog: Disaster Losses and Humanity's Building Boom in Hazard Zones

The Huffington Post, once again demonstrating that it is determined to move beyond profiting from unpaid bloggers or aggregated content, has published an extraordinary investigative report on the development rush that put so many coastal communities in harm?s way when the superstorm struck two weeks ago.

The article explains, as others have, that the storm was extraordinary compared to anything in recent memory, but hardly a worst case. The prime factor behind the huge losses was not the meteorology, but this:

Authorities in New York and New Jersey simply allowed heavy development of at-risk coastal areas to continue largely unabated in recent decades, even as the potential for a massive storm surge in the region became increasingly clear.

In the end, a pell-mell, decades-long rush to throw up housing and businesses along fragile and vulnerable coastlines trumped commonsense concerns about the wisdom of placing hundreds of thousands of closely huddled people in the path of potential cataclysms.

When I first read the piece last night, it immediately harked back to the devastating Colorado fires last summer, where this same issue ? runaway development in a danger zone ? was also revealed best by an online journalism effort ? in that case undertaken by I-News, an innovative partnership involving nonprofit and for-profit news enterprises. Read this passage from ?Red Zone: Colorado?s Growing Wildfire Danger? and listen to the echoes:

In the past two decades, a quarter million people have moved into Colorado?s red zones ? the parts of the state at risk for the most dangerous wildfires. Today, one of every four Colorado homes is in a red zone?.

Today, 1.1 million Coloradans live in more than half a million homes in red zones across the state, an I-News analysis found. That?s one of every four homes and one of every five people in the state. In some counties, including Pitkin ? home to Aspen ? Teller and Summit counties, more than 90 percent of the population lives in a red zone.

As the number of people in red zones has exploded, so has the number of fires ? and the damage each did.

Notice a pattern?

I?ll offer just one more example for now.

Read Susan Saulny?s important 2007 article, ?Development Rises on St. Louis Area Flood Plains, which describes?the building boom around St. Louis in areas that were underwater in the great Mississippi River flood of 1993. While much of that development is behind levees, hydrologists note that levees don?t prevent flooding so much as force it into another community. The article features the important analysis of flood plain development by Nicholas Pinter, a geologist at Southern Illinois University, most notably in his 2005 commentary in Science magazine titled ?One Step Forward, Two Steps Back on U.S. Floodplains.?

Please click here to read a 2011 interview I conducted with Pinter on this pattern, and some ways to break it.

One way, as I wrote recently, is for President Obama and the next Congress to convene experts and reexamine federal programs that, in the end, boost losses in such unnatural disasters.

I?ll end with yet another reprise of Carl Safina?s recent reflection on CNN.com, which I cited in my posts on resilience:

[U]npreparedness requires, one might say, quite a lot of preparation. We build in places prone to flooding. We do that largely because subsidies encourage it. Federal flood insurance is a way the entire country subsidizes building and rebuilding in places destined for repeated hits.

We rely on overhead lines to bring electricity, lines vulnerable to falling trees. And when they fall, we put them right back. Underground lines are more expensive. But if you have to keep repairing the overhead lines?

We?ve created coastal bowling-pin communities; we set ?em up and the weather takes ?em down.
