UK film outlawed for blasphemy finally unbanned

(AP) ? The only movie ever banned in Britain for blasphemy was finally approved for distribution Tuesday, 23 years after it was outlawed.

The experimental short film "Visions of Ecstasy" features scenes of Jesus being seduced on the cross and became a free-speech cause celebre after Britain's film censors refused to give it a rating, a requirement for legal distribution.

The British Board of Film Classification ruled in 1989 that a fantasy scene in which the Spanish mystic St. Teresa of Avila sexually caresses Christ's body could constitute blasphemous libel. The board judged that cutting out the potentially blasphemous material would shorten the 19-minute film by half, so they refused to approve it.

The movie, directed by Nigel Wingrove, became a rallying point for anti-censorship activists, and Wingrove fought the ban all the way to the European Court of Human Rights, which upheld the British decision in 1996.

Wingrove ? dubbed "Britain's answer to Hustler publisher Larry Flynt" by London's Evening Standard newspaper ? went on to found film distribution companies specializing in erotic gothic horror. He also has created artwork for the band Cradle of Filth and manages a burlesque group.

Blasphemy was abolished as an offense in 2008 and on Tuesday the film board gave Wingrove's film an "18" rating, meaning it may be viewed by adults.

The board acknowledged the film would be "deeply offensive to some viewers," but was unlikely to cause harm.

"In the absence of any breach of U.K. law and the lack of any credible risk of harm, as opposed to mere offensiveness, the board has no sustainable grounds on which to refuse a classification to 'Visions Of Ecstasy' in 2012," it said in a statement.

Wingrove welcomed the decision and said the ban had been a setback to his career.

"It was my second self-financing film and had it not been banned I would have continued to make films, but that all got knocked sideways and had a huge impact on my career," he said.

"I don't believe it should have been banned in the first place. No one in the church thought it was blasphemous. Some believed it could be viewed as offensive but that it fell well short of blasphemy," he added.

BritChick Paris: Why I'm Scared To Have A Baby

As some of you have read I recently had a miscarriage. It was horrid but it has been one of my greatest lessons.

I thought I wanted a baby, but actually, when I was faced with the reality I freaked out.

I didn't enjoy being pregnant at all. The romantic ideal of a blossoming mother-to-be was very opposite of my bloated, nauseous and pale self. In truth, I felt out of control, as if I'd been invaded by an alien. I ate like a pig, farted like one too. I felt fat and ugly -- so dressed for 8 months when it was only 2. I have a whole range of baggy leggings and t-shirts now that I hope never to wear again.

Since then it prompted lots of soulsearching.

I now realize I needed the miscarriage to work through some of these feelings before it happens again. I just wasn't ready.

The big question now is when will I be ready?

The odds are a bit against me if you read baby books. I'm not far off 40, everyone tells me my body clock is about to go ping and yet I still feel young and carefree. I want to live my life still. To walk across Paris at dawn or go to Ibiza on a whim for a mad 24 hour clubathon. I am also so happy and in love with my beau. I don't need any more. And maybe at a subconscious level I'm scared a baby would change that. Our love life would somehow suffer.

I love children. But I have seen myself as one of them. I love my husband's kids but I enjoy the upside -- the fun, playtime yet little responsibility. I have also never needed to have kids. I have friends with such a strong maternal instinct that they had decided names and schools before they'd left school themselves.

But if you push me I know deep down I'd love a baby. A child of love. I know it will make me a better person. Clearly that's not a reason to have one, but I know that I will stop fannying around and step up to the plate. Instead of fretting about being a few pounds overweight I will have flesh and blood to worry about.

They key for me is that I have to stop thinking that I am not good enough and that I somehow need to turn into a supermom. Stewing prunes, knitting booties and hypnobirthing kinda mom.

When I was pregnant I stopped all things bad and nasty. Not a single chemical passed my mouth. I also stopped enjoying things I loved. Sex. Sport. Dancing.

In my head, moms meant no more vibrant me. It was about baby first even if I suffered as a result. As my therapist has explained feelings of abandonment have created a desire for hyperprotection. I need to let go of that.

Being me needs to be good enough. Otherwise I guess it will never work. The baby will sense my insecurity and the cycle will repeat.

I guess am letting all of this settle in or in technical terms "integrate." Time is against me. But happiness is more important in the long run. Here's hoping that I can find my groove as a mom.

Groovy mom, groovy baby.

Chip Ganassi Racing leads Rolex 24 at Daytona (AP)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. ? Chip Ganassi Racing was back out front of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, with the defending race winners clinging to the lead Sunday morning in the twice-around-the-clock endurance race.

Joey Hand put the No. 01 BMW Riley out front when Michael Shank Racing had an extended pit stop with about six hours remaining. IndyCar driver Justin Wilson had opened up a nearly full lap lead over the Ganassi team during a triple driving stint, but MSR appeared to change its brakes when Wilson came in for the driver change.

Hand then moved out front before he was replaced by defending Grand-Am champion Scott Pruett. The team is made up of Grand-Am champions Pruett and Memo Rojas, Hand and IndyCar driver Graham Rahal.

The team won last year's race, but appears to be at a horsepower disadvantage this season to the Fords and Chevrolets. MSR's No. 60 is a Ford Riley.

"We're definitely pushing for sure. We don't have quite the straightline speed that those other guys have," Hand said. "But we still have a shot at this thing."

The second Ganassi entry was four laps off the pace with NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya behind the wheel. The car was strong during the night but went six laps down when the shifter broke while IndyCar's Scott Dixon was driving.

That entry is somewhat of the "star car" with NASCAR drivers Montoya and Jamie McMurray, and IndyCar champions Dixon and Dario Franchitti. That group finished second to its Ganassi teammates last season.

Only two Daytona Prototypes were on the lead lap, and the championship-contending SunTrust Racing was knocked out of the race during the first hour on Saturday.

Max Angelelli took the No. 10 Chevrolet to the garage with an engine issue 25 minutes into the race. The team sent the car back out after a few minutes, but moments later Angelelli was back in the garage for good in the 50th running of the prestigious sports car event.

"We've never had an engine problem in all the time we've run the Chevrolet engine program, so this is the first time," team owner Wayne Taylor said. "There was truly nothing we were worried about. In fact, this is probably the one 24 Hour I think we all felt ? the only thing we were worried about was traffic, and we didn't have any issues. Really caught us by surprise."

The engines are made by NASCAR's Earnhardt Childress Racing organization. Taylor said the problem was in the valve train, and was "catastrophic."

Angelelli and Wayne Taylor won the Grand-Am championship in 2005, and have finished second in the standings the last two seasons to Pruett and Rojas. The SunTrust team also won the 24-hour race in 2005.

X-Games star Travis Pastrana made his debut in this race with the AF Waltrip team. He's driving with Michael Waltrip Racing owners Waltrip and Rob Kauffman, and Rui Aguas in a Ferrari in the Grand Touring class.

He called driving the Ferrari something that should be on everyone's "bucket list" and said he was thrilled to have been added to the team last month.

"Most of the experience that I have is actually in the four-wheel-drive cars," said Pastrana, who will race a limited schedule for Waltrip this season in the second-tier Nationwide Series.

"So getting the opportunity to come out here in rear-wheel-drive car I think is very helpful, especially for when NASCAR hits the road courses."

GOP seeks limits on new Colo. child-care rules (AP)

DENVER ? Talk about red tape: Colorado's Department of Human Services last year proposed regulating child care businesses down to the number of crayons per box and the color of dolls kids can play with.

Also included: How many books child care centers should have, limits on computer and TV time, and bans on "googly eyes" and cotton balls, considered potential choking hazards.

Republicans in the Legislature say it highlights out-of-control government ? and they are introducing a bill Friday limiting how far the state can go when it comes to regulating child care.

"This one is at the top of my list because it seems so contrary to what the governor has been saying he wants the state agencies to do," said GOP Sen. Kevin Lundberg. "I expected the governor, when he found about it, to say, `Whoa, hold on a minute ? this isn't what I had in mind ? and to pull the plug. But he hasn't.'"

The state says it's backing off some of the more controversial proposals but is still in the process of drafting dozens of pages of new rules for more than 1,300 licensed child care centers and more than 800 licensed preschools.

"We continue to support the Department of Human Services as it works through a public process on the proposed regulations," Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper's office said in a statement.

Some child-care providers say they worry excessive rules will put them out of business. And Lundberg, who is sponsoring the legislation, said he wants to ensure that the state only regulates health and safety matters.

Department spokeswoman Liz McDonough said new rules are needed because child-care has evolved and is not just about putting kids in front of the television for eight hours.

Reggie Bicha, the executive director for Human Services, told a committee of lawmakers this week that quality child care helps children's long-term success.

"I don't think that we need to trade lowering standards to keep mediocre child care providers in business," he said, according to The Pueblo Chieftain.

Julie Krow, director of the Office of Children, Youth and Families, said businesses are contributing to the rules being crafted. At the earliest, it's possible a draft will be completed late this year, she said.

"We know that investing in early quality childhood education is an investment that saves money later," Krow said.

McDonough said guidelines on the "race" of dolls and classroom materials, such as having a minimum of 10 crayons per box, have been dropped. Officials said the proposal for crayons was based on national quality suggestions for a rich educational experience.

Sandy Bright, who directs three child-care centers in Weld County, is taking a wait and see attitude.

Bright said existing regulations have compelled her to pull her college transcripts from the early `70s as part of her child-care recertification. Employees are required to take classes with titles like "infant-toddler theory."

"Which is kind of interesting because if you don't take infants or toddlers, you're still required to take that course," Bright said.

Bright recently sought assurances from Hickenlooper at a luncheon for the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry during which the governor reiterated his commitment to eliminating red tape.

"If these go through ? four colors of dolls per classroom, numbers of crayons and numbers of everything. I've been in business for 40 years. I'm very concerned about where this is headed," she said.

Hickenlooper responded that his administration is aware of the child-care industry's concerns.

"I guarantee you no one's going to tell you how many crayons you have to have in your crayon box," he said.

US cybersecurity efforts trigger privacy concerns (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The federal government's plan to expand computer security protections into critical parts of private industry is raising concerns that the move will threaten Americans' civil liberties.

In a report for release Friday, The Constitution Project warns that as the Obama administration partners more with the energy, financial, communications and health care industries to monitor and protect networks, sensitive personal information of people who work for or communicate with those companies could be improperly or inadvertently disclosed.

While the government may have good intentions, it "runs the risk of establishing a program akin to wiretapping all network users' communications," the nonpartisan legal think tank says. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the report in advance.

Cybersecurity has become a rapidly expanding priority for the government as federal agencies, private companies and everyday people come under persistent and increasingly sophisticated computer attacks. The threat is diverse, ranging from computer hackers going after banking and financial accounts to terrorists or other nations breaching government networks to steal sensitive data or sabotage critical systems such as the electrical grid, nuclear plants or Wall Street.

Privacy has been a hotly debated issue, particularly as the Pentagon broadens its pilot program to help defense contractors protect their networks and systems. Several companies, including critical jet fighter and drone programs, have been attacked, although the Pentagon has said that no classified information was lost.

And there are plans for the Homeland Security Department to use the defense program as a model to prevent hackers and hostile nations from breaching critical infrastructure. Officials have suggested that Congress needs to craft legislation that would protect companies from certain privacy and other laws in order to share information with the government for cybersecurity purposes.

DHS spokesman Matt Chandler said the legislative proposals reflect the administration's commitment to privacy protections and contain standards to minimize contact with personal information while dealing with cybersecurity threats. "DHS builds strong privacy protections into the core of all cybersecurity programs and initiatives," Chandler said, adding that the agency realizes that providing assistance to private companies is a sensitive task that requires "trust and strict confidentiality."

The Constitution Project report recommends that officials limit the amount and nature of personal information shared between the public and private sectors. And it calls for strict oversight of the cyber programs by Congress and independent audits, to ensure that privacy rights have not been violated.

"The government should not be permitted to conduct an end-run around Fourth Amendment safeguards by relying upon private companies to monitor networks," it said.

In addition, the report raised concerns about the ongoing development of the Einstein 3 program, a government network monitoring system that would both detect and take action against cyberattacks on federal systems. DHS officials have said that extensive privacy protections are in place.

But the report expressed concerns that as DHS and the secretive National Security Agency share information about potential computer-based threats, the NSA could review communications from U.S. individuals without setting up privacy safeguards.

"With more and more people needing to share sensitive personal and financial data over the Internet, it is absolutely vital that, while we are looking to protect our networks against cyberattack, we also preserve our constitutionally guaranteed rights to privacy," said Constitution Project committee member Asa Hutchinson, a former DHS undersecretary who also served as a GOP congressman from Arkansas.

Lawmakers who have been wrestling with these issues over the past several years have several bills in the works, and most include some privacy provisions.

Eyes on Samsung smartphone sales, spending plans (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? Samsung Electronics Co, the world's top technology firm by revenue, will report record quarterly profit on Friday, powered by strong sales of its smartphones, but most interest will be in its 2012 spending plans and mobile sales numbers as it vies with Apple Inc for smartphone supremacy.

Samsung overtook Apple as the biggest smartphone maker in the third quarter, but is likely to have slipped back into second place in October-December as Apple sold a record 37.04 million iPhones. Samsung does not provide its own sales volume data and is likely only to give a growth rate from its third-quarter sales of 27.8 million smartphones. Analysts predict fourth-quarter shipments of 35-37 million.

The South Korean firm said earlier this month its October-December operating profit was likely to be a record 5.2 trillion won ($4.6 billion), up 73 percent from a year ago and up 22 percent from the previous quarter.

Investors will be looking for more detail on Samsung's investment plans for this year after parent Samsung Group announced a record $41.4 billion spending for 2012, with no detailed breakdown. Spending will be on everything from building factories to research and development activities to M&A and hiring.

Best known for making massive investments in new technologies ahead of rivals, Samsung is now banking on logic chips and OLED displays to repeat its roaring success in flash chips, computer memory chips and LCD flat-screens, even as a gloomy global economic and IT spending outlook forces peers to be conservative in spending.

"What's important is the 2012 capex budget, as the headline sales and operating profit ... were already announced," Macquarie analyst Daniel Kim said.

The brokerage estimates Samsung Electronics will announce record investment of 29 trillion won ($25.76 billion), up by almost a third 32 percent from 2011.

Investment in system chips such as mobile processors and sensors used in smartphones, tablets and cameras is likely to exceed spending on its bread-and-butter memory chips for the first time, reaching 7.5 trillion won, or some 1 trillion won more than investment in memory chips, according to analysts.

Samsung trails Nokia in mobile phones, competes with Sony Corp and LG Electronics Inc in televisions, Toshiba and Hynix in chips and LG Display in displays.

RIVALRY WITH APPLE

Samsung only entered the smartphone market in earnest in 2010, some three years after Apple first introduced the iPhone with the touchscreen template.

Samsung may not have come up with the concept, but it has adopted Apple's breakthrough idea perhaps better than any other handset maker - and now seeks to offer the Apple experience at a better price, with better functionality.

Apple is Samsung's biggest client, buying mainly chips and displays, and the two firms are locked in a bruising patent battle in some 10 countries from the United States to Europe, Japan and Australia as they jostle for top spot in the booming smartphone and tablet market.

Apple, though, is streets ahead in profitability. Apple, which generates half its revenue from the iPhone, boasts a 37.4 percent operating margin versus Samsung's 11 percent, and its $17.3 billion operating profit is almost four times what Samsung earned from selling phones, chips, flat screens, TVs and fridges combined.

Shares in Samsung, also the world's top maker of memory chips and TVs, have climbed 20 percent in the past three months - and hit a life high of 1,113,000 won this week - outperforming a 3 percent gain in the KOSPI over the same period. On Nasdaq, Apple shares have risen 23 percent in that time, hitting a life high of more than $454 on Wednesday.

Steady Diet of Mental Stimulation Might Reduce Alzheimer's Risk (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Jan. 23 (HealthDay News) -- People who engage in activities such as reading and playing games throughout their lives may be lowering levels of a protein in their brains that is linked to Alzheimer's disease, a new study suggests.

Although whether the buildup of the protein, beta amyloid, causes Alzheimer's disease is debatable, it is a hallmark of the condition, the researchers noted.

"Staying cognitively active over the lifetime may reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by preventing the accumulation of Alzheimer's-related pathology," said study author Susan Landau, a research scientist at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute at the University of California, Berkeley.

"Some of the literature has hypothesized this finding, but this is the first study to report that lifetime cognitive activity is directly linked to amyloid deposition in the brain," she said. "We think that cognitive activity is probably one of a variety of lifestyle practices -- occupational, recreational and social activities -- that may be important."

The report was published in the Jan. 23 online edition of the Archives of Neurology.

In the United States, more than 5 million people have Alzheimer's disease, and it is now the sixth-leading killer in the country, according to the researchers. No cure exists for the neurodegenerative condition, but a draft of the first-ever National Alzheimer's Plan released last week laid out plans by the federal government to have effective treatment by 2025.

For the study, Landau's team used a special imaging technique called positron emission tomography, which is able to see beta amyloid plaque in the brain, plus neuropsychological tests to see what effect cognitive stimulation might have on Alzheimer's risk.

The tests were done on 65 healthy people, average age of about 76. In addition, they tested 10 patients with Alzheimer's disease whose average was nearly 75 and 11 young people who were an average of about 25 years old.

"We interviewed them about their lifetime participation in cognitively stimulating activities," said lead researcher Dr. William Jagust, a professor of neuroscience also at the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute.

The researchers found that people who engaged in brain-stimulating activities, particularly when they were young and middle-aged, had the least amount of beta amyloid.

Those older adults who reported the most activity had amyloid levels similar to those young individuals, while those who engaged in the least such activities had amyloid levels similar to the Alzheimer's patients.

"This study suggests that not only does it reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease, but it may affect the pathological process itself," Jagust said.

Why this kind of mind stimulation reduces the amount of beta amyloid isn't known, he added.

"The environment may affect the amount of amyloid that's deposited," he said. "This kind of lifetime cognitive activity may make people's brains more efficient. And if your brain is functioning better, it's possible that would result in producing less of this amyloid," he explained.

"Cognitive activity seems to have powerful effects on the brain," Jagust said. "Lifestyle can have a profound effect on the basic biology of Alzheimer's disease."

The size of the effect isn't known nor is the size of the reduction in risk for Alzheimer's disease, he noted.

Greg M. Cole, associate director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, said that "a number of studies have suggested that increased education or cognitive activity associates with reduced risk for Alzheimer's."

"So if you have more wits to begin with, you can afford to lose more before you become impaired," he said.

However, this new study reports something different, namely that higher cognitive activity in young and middle-aged adults is associated with lower levels of Alzheimer's pathology, Cole said.

"There may be a plausible theory for this because increased brain use increases fitness and reduces the amount of brain activity required to execute a task, and production of the beta amyloid toxin is associated with brain activity. This is an interesting new finding that may have serious implications," he said.

Another expert, Dr. Sam Gandy, the Mount Sinai Professor of Alzheimer's Disease Research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, added that "this new study jibes well with other existing epidemiological studies in which social engagement has been linked to successful cognitive aging on purely clinical grounds."

"There is also a link between physical activity and reduced risk for Alzheimer's, and one would guess that physical exercise might well delay onset of Alzheimer's if exercise were begun years before cognitive decline developed, but this is yet to be established," Gandy said.

Gaddafi supporters seize control of Libyan town (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Supporters of ousted Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi seized control of the town of Bani Walid on Monday after clashes with a militia loyal to the new government in which four people were killed, witnesses told Reuters.

A resident of Bani Walid, about 200 km (120 miles) south-east of Tripoli, said the sides fought using heavy weaponry, including 106 mm anti-tank weapons, and that 20 people were wounded.

Another witness told Reuters the fighting had now stopped but that Gaddafi loyalists were in control of the town centre, where they were flying green flags, a symbol of allegiance to the ousted administration.

"They control the town now. They are roaming the town," said the witness, a fighter with the 28th May militia which was fighting the Gaddafi loyalists.

Bani Walid, base of the powerful Warfallah tribe, was one of the last towns in Libya to surrender to the anti-Gaddafi rebellion last year. Many people there oppose the country's new leadership.

The uprising in Bani Walid could not come at a worse time for the ruling National Transitional Council (NTC). It is already reeling from violent protests in the eastern city of Benghazi and the resignation of its second most senior official.

An air force official told Reuters that jets were being mobilized to fly to Bani Walid. In Tripoli, there were signs of security being tightened, Reuters reporters in the city said.

FIGHTERS "MASSACRED"

The violence in Bani Walid was sparked when members of the May 28 militia arrested some Gaddafi loyalists.

That prompted other supporters of the former leader, who was captured and killed in October, to attack the militia's garrison in the town, said the resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

"They massacred men at the doors of the militia headquarters," said the resident.

During Libya's nine-month civil war, anti-Gaddafi rebels fought for months to take Bani Walid.

Local tribal elders eventually agreed to let NTC fighters enter the town, but relations have been uneasy since and there have been occasional flare-ups of violence.

In November last year, several people were killed in Bani Walid when a militia group from Tripoli's Souq al-Juma district arrived in the town to try to arrest some local men.

Taking back control of the town will be challenging because it has natural defenses. Anyone approaching from the north has to descend into a deep valley and then climb up the other side, giving defenders an advantage.

It was this landscape, in part, that prevented anti-Gaddafi militias from taking the town during the civil war, despite the fact they were heavily armed and had superior numbers.

Joe Paterno Dies at 85, Reports Say

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, the all-time Division I leader in wins, and who resigned amid the university's child molestation scandal just months ago, has reportedly passed away due to complications from lung cancer. He was 85.

On Saturday, as friends and family were being summoned to State College, Pa., Hospital, a family spokesman said the coach had taken a turn for the worse.

Joe Paterno Photograph

Penn State student website Onward State reported that PSU team members were notified of Paterno's passing via email. However, a Paterno family spokesperson denied the report and his son tweeted that his father "continues to fight."

Known for his "success with honor" motto, thick glasses, rolled-up pants and black cleats, Paterno left an indelible mark on Penn State and college football in general.

Joe is survived by wife Sue Paterno, five children and 17 grandchidlren.

A Brooklyn native and Brown University graduate, Paterno began coaching the Nittany Lions in 1966 and his tenure stretched to October of this year.

In his 46 years as head coach, Paterno holds the all-time Division I record for football coaching wins with a 409-136-3 record and two national titles.

After a highly celebrated career and iconic status, Paterno's career as coach ended as a result of a scandal involving former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Sandusky allegedly sexually assaulted young boys, including a 10-year-old. Paterno was fired over his handling (or lack of handling) of the scandal.

Announcing his retirement, he said, “This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more."

"I'm sick about it. I didn’t know exactly how to handle it, and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was."

"So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn’t work out that way."

In November, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and his health rapidly deteriorated.

Though the scandal sullied Paterno's image in his final days, the coach enjoyed decades of success and reverence on the campus he and his wife helped build.

That's not likely to change anytime soon.

No. 7 Kansas supports Robinson in rough times (AP)

LAWRENCE, Kan. ? The third weekend in January will always be shrouded in darkness for Thomas Robinson.

It was this weekend last year that the junior forward for No. 7 Kansas received a phone call from his young sister, her voice trembling, to say that their mother had died of a heart attack, ripping away the last vestiges of close family that they had.

Now, through overwhelming heartache, Robinson has matured into one of the nation's premier players, and has proven that there are often brighter days ahead.

"I couldn't have handled the situation he's been through near as well as he did," Kansas coach Bill Self said this week, reflecting on a terrible time for the entire program. "He's a remarkable kid and he deserves the things that have come his way."

What lies ahead are almost assuredly NBA riches.

The 6-foot-9 forward leads the Jayhawks (15-3, 5-0 Big 12) in scoring and rebounding, and is coming off perhaps the finest performance of his career, when he logged 27 points and 14 rebounds in a rout of then-unbeaten and No. 3 Baylor last Monday night. Robinson could very well go in the first five picks of the June draft, which would mean a minimum rookie salary of more than $2.8 million.

A year ago, he was wondering how to pay for a funeral.

The phone call came about 11 p.m. on a Friday night. Robinson answered and on the other end was his 7-year-old sister, Jayla. The two had been raised by their single mother, Lisa Robinson, and spoke often enough that Robinson had little reason to wonder whether something was amiss.

Jayla told him that Lisa Robinson had died. In a span of three weeks, they had also lost their grandfather and grandmother.

"It was a rough weekend. It was really emotional, definitely," recalled senior guard Tyshawn Taylor. "I guess that's the easiest way to describe it, really emotional."

The team spent most of the night consoling Robinson, who at the time was coming off the bench for the Jayhawks. A few hours later, the mentally and physically drained team lost to Texas, ending a 69-game home winning streak that had lasted almost four years.

On Tuesday, the team played at Colorado. Then on Wednesday, nearly everyone involved with the program flew into a snowstorm in Washington, D.C., for a service on Thursday.

"He broke down like anybody else would," Taylor said. "He handled it a lot better than a lot of people I know have and probably would have."

Robinson's father had never really been involved in his life, though he now has custody of Jayla. But at the time, Robinson felt entirely alone, which Self didn't fully understand until he asked a question the night of his mother's death.

"I said, `Thomas, is there anybody you want us to call?'" Self recalled months later. "He told me, `Coach, you don't get it. There isn't anybody left.'"

The program provided something of a surrogate family.

They helped raise money to cover some of the funeral expenses, and to set up a scholarship fund to cover Jayla's college education. Kansas State coach Frank Martin was among those who donated money, asking fans of the rival Wildcats to do the same.

"I was so proud of our administration, the NCAA, for allowing us to do some things for him," Self said, "things he might not have had, things you take for granted ? buying a casket, the dress she wore, things like that. I was really happy that other people allowed it to be legal, because we would obviously do whatever we could."

Looking back, Self tried to find a silver lining in an otherwise bleak period.

He remembers the outpouring of support from teammates, the way everyone rallied around their buddy, and the emotion that poured out over the span of days, weeks and even months.

"Winning ball games is what coaches are judged upon over time," Self said, "but it is and should be bigger than that, and that was a prime example of a group of guys actually becoming a family, and it was cool to watch.

"Teams always want to be families," he said, "and they'll say that, but I think it's harder to actually become a family until you go through a crisis-type situation, and that was a crisis-type situation, and to see how everybody responded to that. But at the same time, nobody felt sorry for anybody, they were still coachable. They still wanted to be coached. It was a neat deal."

Robinson, who was off limits to media this week, has by all accounts handled the anniversary with the grace and dignity. He's been focused on Saturday's game at Texas, the same team the Jayhawks played on that fateful weekend a year ago.

He'll be trying to help the Jayhawks win their ninth straight game and keep their perfect Big 12 mark intact, rather than reflecting on the personal burden he's carried the past year.

"T-Rob is cool," Taylor said. "He's handling it well, and as a team, we're there for him, so if he does break down or anything like that, we'll be there."

Serena Williams into 4th round at Australian Open (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Serena Williams was so dominant in her 6-1, 6-1 third-round win over Greta Arn at the Australian Open that there's probably only one shot she'll remember more than most.

At 5-0 and a point from winning the first set, Williams lined up in the ideal position for overhead but then completely shanked it, spraying the ball wide. She screamed and put a hand over her face.

The 92nd-ranked Arn saved another set point before holding serve for the first time. Williams responded by winning the next five games before Arn held again. The match ended in 59 minutes Saturday, on consecutive double-faults by the Hungarian.

"I'm nowhere near where I want to be," said Williams, who has won her last 17 matches at Melbourne Park. "I'm just trying to play through it. A little rusty ? just trying to play through my rust."

Williams has won the Australian Open five times, including back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010. She didn't get to defend her title last year due to injury.

She badly sprained her left ankle in a warmup tournament at Brisbane two weeks ago, casting doubt again on her participation at Melbourne, but the 13-time major winner has shown no signs of being restricted in her first three matches ? she has only conceded 11 games.

Next up she faces Ekaterina Makarova, who beat fellow Russian and seventh-seeded Vera Zvonareva earlier Saturday.

Williams is the only American left in the singles at the Australian Open after Vania King lost earlier to former French Open winner Ana Ivanovic ? the last U.S. man exited the tournament Friday when John Isner lost in five sets to Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

Novak Djokovic won the last Australian title at the beginning of a 41-match unbeaten run and finished 2011 with the No. 1-ranking after winning three of the four major titles.

Against a Frenchman with a reputation for playing long matches, Djokovic wasn't exactly generous with his time.

Djokovic ensured Nicolas Mahut had a 30th birthday he won't quickly forget, routing him 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 in 1 hour, 14 minutes. Mahut lost the longest match in Grand Slam history over 11 hours, 5 minutes against Isner at Wimbledon in 2010.

Mahut was slowed by a left leg injury, but continued the match because the previous matches on Rod Laver Arena were over so quickly.

Djokovic commended him: "I wish him happy birthday and hopefully tonight he can enjoy it."

Djokovic has won 24 straight sets at the Australian Open, and has lost 10 games in his first three matches this time.

"I always played well in Australia. This is the only Grand Slam I won twice," he said. "The conditions are great. They're very suitable to my style of the game, day and night. I'm really looking forward to next week."

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who lost the 2008 final here to Djokovic, beat Frederico Gil of Portugal 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Like Djokovic, No. 4-ranked Andy Murray was also up against a French opponent and had no trouble advancing in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 over Michael Llodra.

In all six Frenchmen reached the third round, but only two of them advanced. Tsonga wasted hardly any time becoming the first of them to move into the round of 16 and will next play Kei Nishikori of Japan.

Nishikori became the first Japanese man to reach the fourth round in Melbourne in the Open era with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-3 win over unseeded Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

Richard Gasquet, the fourth highest-ranked Frenchman at No. 18, knocked out ninth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. He will play fifth-seeded David Ferrer, who lost the first four games against Juan Ignacio Chela before recovering to win 7-5, 6-2, 6-1.

In the biggest upset of the day, No. 92-ranked Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan held off an ailing Gael Monfils, seeded 14th, 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 1-6, 6-4.

On the women's side, two Wimbledon winners ? Petra Kvitova and Maria Sharapova ? advanced, but two top 10 players went out.

Zvonareva was beaten 7-6 (7), 6-1 by Makerova and No. 9 Marion Bartoli lost 6-3, 6-3 to Zheng Jie of China, a former Australian Open semifinalist.

Fourth-seeded Sharapova routed Germany's Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-2 to continue her fantastic start to the tournament. The 2008 Australian champion has only dropped five games in three rounds and next plays No. 14 Sabine Lisicki, who beat two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Sharapova and Petra Kvitova are among the four women who can claim the No. 1 ranking at the end of the tournament. They could play each other in the semifinals, although Kvitova insisted she hasn't looked that far ahead.

"I don't know who lost and who win," the Wimbledon champion said. "No, really, for me doesn't care."

Kvitova reached the round of 16 when Maria Kirilenko retired with a left thigh injury while trailing 6-0, 1-0 after 38 minutes.

Keystone XL oil pipeline rejected

House Speaker, John Boehner said: "Republicans in congress will continue to push this because it is good for our country"

The US state department has formally recommended the rejection of a controversial crude oil pipeline.

The state department denied a permit for the 1,600-mile (2,700km) Keystone XL pipeline, saying it had insufficient time to review the plans.

The Canada-Texas project has been delayed amid objections by the state of Nebraska and environmental groups.

At the end of 2011, Republicans forced a final decision on the plan within 60 days during a legislative standoff.

US President Barack Obama said he was disappointed that the deadline set by Republicans in Congress had caused the state department to reject the project before a full study could be undertaken.

"This announcement is not a judgment on the merits of the pipeline, but the arbitrary nature of a deadline that prevented the state department from gathering the information necessary to approve the project and protect the American people."

But Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke to Mr Obama and expressed his "profound disappointment" with the decision, a spokesman said.

The crude oil pipeline would run from western Canada to oil refineries on the Texas coast.

Jobs at stake

The state department added that Wednesday's recommendation not to proceed with the current proposal would not preclude TransCanada, the developer, from submitting a new route for the pipeline.

The president's policies are making the economy worse, not better?

End Quote John Boehner House of Representatives Speaker

Officials said that any new plan that was broadly similar to the rejected proposal could be processed more quickly, but it would take between 12 to 18 months to complete a full review.

Keystone XL has been approved by Canada and is supported by US Republicans who say it would create much-needed jobs and improve prospects for US energy independence.

The Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, criticised the Obama administration for failing to give the green light to a project that would have created "hundreds of thousands of jobs".

"The president's policies are making the economy worse, not better," he said, adding that the pipeline would be good for the country. Mr Boehner pledged that the fight was not over.

Republican Congressman Fred Upton said he has requested that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testify before a House committee.

The oil industry has estimated the project would create 20,000 jobs, although the state department and some independent studies suggest a lower figure of 6,000 jobs.

Carbon emissions

Environmental groups and the US state of Nebraska expressed concerns that the pipeline could contaminate a major aquifer on its route.

There are also concerns about carbon emissions from oil sands production in Alberta, a western Canadian province.

Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, a group that has protested the Keystone XL project, praised President Obama for taking a stand against the "fossil fuel lobby".

"This isn't just the right call, it's the brave call," Mr McKibben said in a statement.

The legislature of Nebraska passed a measure requiring state approval of any route before TransCanada could start construction.

The pipeline would also pass through the US states of Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma.

The White House had tried to postpone a final decision on the project until after the 2012 presidential election.

But during a congressional impasse on a payroll tax holiday in December, Republicans forced the Obama administration to agree to make a decision on the pipeline within two months.

The US state department, however, said this would not be enough time to carry out the legally required environmental studies needed to approve the project.

Sunday Times editor confirms 'blagging' (AP)

LONDON ? The editor of Britain's Sunday Times has confirmed that someone working for the newspaper impersonated Gordon Brown to obtain details about the former prime minister's finances.

John Witherow told Britain's judge-led inquiry into media ethics on Tuesday that the paper used deceit to obtain information from Abbey National bank as part of a 2000 investigation into Brown's purchase of an apartment. Brown, then Britain's Chancellor of the Exchequer, later became prime minister.

The Sunday Times has argued the story was in the public interest, and therefore obtaining information by deceit ? or "blagging" ? was defensible.

Witherow said while the paper sometimes used subterfuge for stories in the public interest it has never hacked phones.

The press-ethics inquiry was set up following revelations News of the World journalists had illegally eavesdropped on voicemails.

UK loses legal bid to deport Jordanian cleric (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? A Jordanian cleric once described as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe" won an appeal in the European courts on Tuesday to stop Britain from deporting him to Jordan to stand trial on terrorism charges.

Seven judges at the European Court of Human Rights ruled that the preacher known as Abu Qatada would not receive a fair trial in Jordan because evidence against him may have been obtained using torture.

Qatada, whose real name is Omar Othman, has been fighting attempts to deport him for six years and his case has become a key test of how Britain treats foreign suspects accused of having links with groups such as al Qaeda.

A court in Jordan has found Qatada guilty in his absence of involvement in two bomb plots and a senior British judge has described him as a "truly dangerous" supporter of radical Islamist groups.

The European court said a deal signed between Britain and Jordan in 2005 to protect deported suspects from torture or abuse would uphold Qatada's human rights. However, the judges said any retrial was likely to be flawed.

"In the absence of any assurance by Jordan that the torture evidence would not be used ... his deportation to Jordan to be retried would give rise to a flagrant denial of justice," the court said in a statement.

The British government has three months to request a review of the case by another five judges at the European court. Home Secretary (interior minister) Theresa May appeared to suggest that Britain was likely to challenge the decision.

"This is not the end of the road, and we will now consider all the legal options available to us. In the meantime, Qatada will remain in detention in the UK," she said in a statement.

Qatada, who was born in 1960 near Bethlehem, then part of Jordan and now of the Israeli-occupied West Bank, is being held in Long Lartin prison in Worcestershire, central England.

Never formally charged with an offence, he has been in and out of custody and been held under a form of house arrest since he was first detained under anti-terrorism laws in 2002.

Human rights groups say he should stand trial in Britain. That is highly unlikely due to worries that some of the evidence against him was extracted using torture. Ministers also fear that a trial could compromise the work of the security services who investigated Qatada.

"If Abu Qatada is to be tried for terrorism, this should happen in a British court without further delay," said Shami Chakrabarti, director of rights group Liberty.

Mount Rainier park official: Snowshoer found alive

(AP) ? A 66-year-old snowshoer who had been missing on Mount Rainier since Saturday was found alive Monday by a team of three rescuers, a national park spokeswoman said.

Yong Chun Kim, of Tacoma, Wash., was alert, conscious and cold but otherwise stable when the team reached him at about 1:40 p.m., park spokeswoman Lee Taylor said. Weather conditions prevented a helicopter from landing in the area, and rescuers were bringing in a Sno-Cat snow vehicle to help carry him out to a paved road ? hopefully by about 10 p.m., she said.

Kim, who has been snowshoeing for a decade, was well equipped for a day of snowshoeing but didn't have overnight gear.

Temperatures dropped into the teens and eight inches of new snow fell in some areas since Saturday. With winds whipping on the mountain, some areas saw as much as 30 inches of snow. More snow is expected over the next few days.

"As soon as we heard he was alive, my sister, his wife, praised God and said 'Hallelujah,'" Kim's sister-in-law, Sang Soon Tomyn told The Associated Press after learning from relatives that Kim had been found. "We were so worried. We prayed every day."

She said her brother-in-law was a strong hiker, had food in his backpack and knew the area very well, so they prayed he would be all right.

"He's a very strong person," she said.

Snowshoers use specialized footgear that allows them to spread their weight over a larger area, which keeps them from sinking into deep snow and makes it possible to hike into snowy areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Kim was leading a group of 16 members in the Paradise area, a popular high-elevation destination on the mountain's southwest flank, about a 100-mile drive south from Seattle.

He became separated from his party after sliding down a slope. Kim radioed to the group twice to say he was OK, but he failed to meet up with them in the parking lot. A search was launched Saturday afternoon.

Teams of park rangers, search dogs and volunteers combed a snowy area of Mount Rainier on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Because Kim was the leader of his group, other snowshoers weren't able to accurately describe where he had slipped, Taylor said.

It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that a group member could better pinpoint where Kim had fallen. Searchers had initially believed Kim fell in a different area, based on descriptions from the group, Taylor said.

"We're so thankful for the community and for everyone who was willing to volunteer to help find him," Tomyn said. "It's dangerous rescue work. But we really appreciate it."
