LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Columbia Pictures has hired Brian Nelson ("Hard Candy") to write "Taped," a remake of the Dutch thriller of the same name for "Lawless" producers Red Wagon, a representative for Red Wagon told TheWrap on Monday.
The studio acquired the rights to the film in February, shortly after it opened in the Netherlands. Red Wagon's Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick are producing the remake. NL Films, the producers of the original feature, are serving as executive producers.
The story follows a couple that videotapes a murder by a bad cop while they are on holiday in Argentina. They become embroiled in the drama and end up fighting for their lives in order to escape.
The original film was directed by Diederik van Rooijen and starred Barry Atsmer and Susan Visser. Nelson's other credits include "30 Days of Night" and "Devil."
Red Wagon's "Lawless" hits theaters in the U.S. on August 29.
Released in 2005, "Hard Candy" was nominated by the British Independent Film Awards for Best Foreign Film and won a slew of other prizes. The film tells the story of a teenage girl who raids the home of a man that she believes to be a pedophile with the intent of exposing him.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Sunday its operatives have confirmed that the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network was killed in an airstrike in Pakistan, even as the Taliban vowed that he was alive and well.
Shafiquallh Tahriri, the spokesman for Afghanistan's National Directorate of Security, said Badruddin Haqqani was killed last week. He did not provide any further details, and would not say what information the agency's operatives were basing their conclusion on.
Tahiri's account is similar to one provided Saturday by a senior Taliban leader who said Haqqani was killed in a drone strike. It also hews closely to a version provided by Pakistani officials who said they were 90 percent sure the militant commander was killed Tuesday in a missile attack in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.
Haqqani's death would mark a major blow to the organization founded by his father, Jalaluddin Haqqani, which is viewed by the U.S. as a powerful enemy in Afghanistan. The son is considered the network's day-to-day operations commander. The Haqqani network has been blamed for a series of high-profile attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan, and the U.S. considers it one of the most powerful militant groups operating in the country.
The Taliban, who are closely allied with the Haqqani network, have rejected all reports of Haqqani's death.
Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, said Haqqani is alive and in good health in Afghanistan.
"A number of media have reported that Badruddin Haqqani has been killed. We would like to inform all media that this rumor is not correct," Mujahid said in the email to reporters late Saturday.
"Badruddin Haqqani is in the country and is occupied with his operational responsibilities. He is alive and healthy. The rumor about him being killed is more propaganda of the enemy," he said.
In a telephone call with The Associated Press on Sunday Mujahid continued to maintain that Haqqani was alive.
The U.S. does not comment publicly on its drone program, which is widely reviled by the Pakistani public and has been a source of tension with Islamabad.
The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.
Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure and is believed to have played an active role in kidnappings, extortion and high-profile operations in Afghanistan. Tahiri said that Haqqani's responsibilities included arranging foreign suicide bombings, maintaining relations with other insurgent groups, recruiting Pakistani Taliban fighters to the Haqqani group and overseeing operations in southeastern Afghanistan and in Kabul.
"He was the mastermind of the organized suicide attacks in Kabul," Tahiri said, referring to a number of high-profile strikes in the Afghan capital targeting everything from hotels to Western embassies.
"He was the mastermind of the organized suicide attacks in Kabul," Tahiri said.
Still, there are likely people waiting in the wings to replace Badruddin, said former Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh, now an opposition leader.
"They are going to find another person to replace him. What I know is that his elder brother, Sirajuddin Haqqani, is playing a larger role in the the Haqqani network," Saleh said in an interview on Afghanistan's Tolo television. He said until the group's ability to operate across Afghanistan and Pakistan is limited, "killing their commanders or leaders will have its effect, but not that large of an effect."
The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.
Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter, David Rohde, the department said.
After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.
The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

Harney transferred from his duties as assistant commandant of the Quartermaster School to assume his current duties at the university.
CONCRETE ACTION: France plans to cut gasoline taxes to ease the pressure of rising prices on French households as the Socialist-led government attempts to quell rising concerns about the country's sluggish economy.
PRICEY PETROLEUM: Details of the tax cut will be revealed next week. Gasoline currently runs more than ?1.70 a liter in Paris (about $8 a gallon).
THERE'S MORE: The government also announced plans to encourage the French to save more in tax-free bank accounts set up under a special state program. Funds from those accounts would support the construction of new public housing or making current buildings more environmentally efficient.
A high-volume public debate in Israel over a possible imminent military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities is designed to pressure Washington to back its ally more firmly, experts say.
Media chatter over Israel's intentions has become a cacophony, fed daily by pronouncements from politicians, retired generals, former security officials and various commentators.
They fill newspaper columns and radio and TV broadcasts with their opinions for or against a pre-emptive Israeli operation against Iran, with or without US approval or assistance.
Such talk has been further fuelled by the mass distribution of gas masks to the public, by tests of an SMS attack warning system and by speculation about possible Israeli casualty numbers in the event of an Iranian counter-attack.
Defence Minister Ehud Barak and other senior officials have estimated a conflict could last 30 days and claim 500 Israeli lives.
"There is an orchestrated hysteria, deliberately timed, to put the country in a state of anxiety, artificial or not," former military intelligence chief Uri Saguy wrote this weekend in the left-leaning Haaretz newspaper.
Apart from preparing public opinion for the consequences of a conflict, the surge in public statements aims to push US President Barack Obama to take a more hawkish stance on Iran, said Denis Charbit, professor of political science at Israel's Open University.
"The use of this public diplomacy on the part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his defence minister aims to obtain a clearer commitment by the United States to attack if Iran continues its nuclear programme, or at least to give Israel the green light to do so," he told AFP.
Obama has said Washington will stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but has spoken of military action as a last resort that should be preceded by diplomacy and economic sanctions. Netanyahu on the other hand has aggressively pushed the idea of a pre-emptive strike.
There is concern in Washington that a unilateral Israeli strike may not destroy Iran's underground nuclear facilities and could spark Iranian retaliation worldwide, dragging the United States into another war in the Middle East.
"Statements from the White House are considered too vague by Israeli leaders," Charbit said. "By publicly raising the possibility of an imminent Israeli military operation, they want to push the Americans into showing their hand."
The Israeli wish for a firmer US commitment was expressed by another former head of military intelligence, Amos Yadlin, in an opinion piece published at the weekend in the Washington Post.
"The US president should visit Israel and tell its leadership -- and, more important, its people -- that preventing a nuclear Iran is a US interest, and if we have to resort to military action, we will," he wrote, suggesting that Obama address Israel's parliament.
"This message, delivered by the president of the United States to the Israeli Knesset, would be far more effective than US officials' attempts to convey the same sentiment behind closed doors," said Yadlin, who is in regular contact with Netanyahu and senior Israeli defence and security officials.
But Eytan Gilboa, an expert on US-Israel relations at Bar-Ilan University near Tel Aviv, warned that the Israeli strategy of putting pressure on the White House could be counter-productive, especially with Obama up for re-election in November.
"The period before the presidential election in the United States is inopportune," he said.
"The series of leaks and declarations in the Israeli media has a negative impact by exposing a high level of mutual mistrust and a lack of coordination between Israel and the United States."
Gilboa was however cautiously optimistic about a possible Netanyahu-Obama meeting on the sidelines of next month's UN General Assembly in New York, although Netanyahu's office has so far not confirmed he will attend.
"The meeting might provide a good opportunity to restore trust and understanding between the two leaders regarding the policy towards Iran," he said.

An ocean surge crashed into waterfront shanties in Nigeria's economic capital of Lagos, leaving at least one person dead and 15 missing, officials said Sunday.
Rescue officials were evacuating the area and surveying residents, but had so far recovered one body and determined 15 people were unaccounted for from the incident on Saturday.
"About 30 shanty houses belonging to ... fishermen were affected by the surge," said Iyiola Akande of the National Emergency Management Agency.
"Fifteen people were missing, one body washed ashore and recovered. About 100 people displaced will be rehabilitated by government."

The Obama administration has targeted our state for allowing a time-honored tradition regarding the military vote. In a move that could have an impact on the final result of the presidential election, Barack Obama?s campaign has sued Ohio to block a measure which extends early voting for members of the military. The action brought quick responses from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and as many as 15 military groups.
DeWine recently told Fox News that he found the July 17 action by Obama campaign, the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party ?quite shocking.? The tradition for allowing special circumstances for military personnel in voting dates back to the civil war, he said. Voting in a free election is one of the pillars of a democratic society. No group of people should be afforded the right to vote more than those who defend our democracy with their lives. Americans, do your homework ? vote for freedom and democracy this November.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange prepared to weigh into a standoff between Britain and Ecuador over his future on Sunday by speaking from a balcony of the Ecuadorean embassy where he holed up to avoid arrest by police deployed in force outside.
Ecuador has granted political asylum to the former computer hacker who incensed the United States and its allies by using his WikiLeaks website to leak hundreds of thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic and military cables in 2010.
WikiLeaks had said that Assange would make a statement outside the embassy, stirring speculation that he would be arrested by British police arrayed in force outside the red-brick legation in the opulent Knightsbridge district of London.
But a workman inside the embassy could be seen on Sunday morning prising the hinges off a door leading to a small balcony on the corner of the embassy, signalling that Assange would speak from that perch to keep himself safe from arrest.
?I cannot go into details of that for security reasons,? a spokesman for WikiLeaks said when asked how Assange would make his statement, which was expected at around 3 p.m. (1400 GMT).
Assange, an Australian, is wanted in Sweden for questioning regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault and Britain has said he will not be granted safe passage out of his Ecuadorean embassy refuge, which enjoys diplomatic status.
Assange, 41, took sanctuary in the embassy in June after exhausting appeals in British courts against extradition to Sweden. He says he fears Sweden would eventually hand him over to the United States where, in his view, he would face persecution and long-term imprisonment.
A police helicopter circled overhead while about 100 British police officers in black stab vests were stationed outside the embassy on Sunday morning, lining walls under the balcony where Assange was expected to speak.
The exterior door was earlier removed from the balcony above which the yellow, blue and red Ecuadorean flag was draped in what appeared to be preparations for Assange?s appearance.
The balcony was likely to be deemed part of the Ecuadorean embassy, thus insulating him from arrest by British police.
?FIGHTING SPIRIT?
More than 50 of Assange supporters, many of whom have slept on sheets of cardboard outside the building since Wednesday, have decorated barriers with messages of support for Assange and placards reading ?asylum - end the witch hunt?.
?They are not treating him fairly,? said Chantal, 28, a French pro-WikiLeaks blogger who had travelled overnight with a friend from near Paris in the hope of seeing Assange speak.
?Great Britain has shown it doesn?t respect human rights - political asylum is a right which should be respected by all countries,? she said. She refused to give her surname.
There was also a large crowd of curious passersby and bemused shoppers with bags from the nearby ritzy Harrods store watching the proceedings from across the street.
?Julian Assange is in fighting spirit,? Baltasar Garzon, a Spanish jurist and prominent human rights investigator who heads Assange?s legal team, told reporters outside the embassy.
?He is thankful to the people of Ecuador and to President (Rafael) Correa for granting him asylum,? said Garzon.
Assange?s attempt to escape extradition has touched off a diplomatic tussle between Britain and Ecuador, which accused London of threatening to raid its embassy and casting the dispute as an arrogant European power treating a Latin American nation like a colony.
Britain says the dispute is about its legal obligations and that Assange should be extradited to Sweden. But Assange says he fears he will eventually be sent to the United States although Washington has so far kept its distance from the dispute.
?The United States views this as a matter to be resolved between the British government, the Ecuadorean government and the Swedish government,? White House spokesman Josh Earnest said to reporters travelling with U.S. President Barack Obama.
?At this point, we have not intervened in this matter and I don?t have any guidance for you right now on whether or not that?s something we would intervene in,? Earnest said.
Do you agree with Ecuador's decision to grant WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange asylum?

ScienceDaily (Aug. 2, 2012) ? Researchers have uncovered 9 new genes associated with bone health. This collaborative study found clues to the cause of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and high bone density syndromes by investigating the bone mineral content, strength and flexibility.
A genetic screening approach to studying bone disease has found nine new genes associated with bone health and suggests a new way to discover genes that may be implicated in human skeletal diseases. A collaborative study of the mineral content, strength and flexibility of bones has found clues to the cause of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, and high bone density syndromes. The study, which brings together specialist skills in mouse gene deletion and bone measurement to assess the strength of bones in 100 mutant mouse lines, is the largest reported screen of its type for genes that regulate bone health.
All nine of the new genes discovered had not previously been implicated in skeletal disorders and were discovered by randomly screening different strains of mice engineered such that a single gene had been inactivated in their genome.
Chronic diseases such as osteoporosis represent a global healthcare burden but little is known about their genetic basis. Osteoporosis is the most common of skeletal disorders, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide at a cost of billions of pounds each year. Although it is known there is a strong genetic component to this disease, few of the genes that control bone structure and density are known.
"We are developing new ways of finding genes that are essential for normal development of the skeleton, and which maintain the structure and integrity of bone during adulthood. These genes will provide new understanding of the mechanisms responsible for bone diseases and may ultimately lead to the development of new treatments," explains Professor Graham Williams, senior author from Imperial College London. "We collaborated with outstanding colleagues at the Sanger Institute and several Universities. Our studies span many areas of expertise and we have developed a detailed and specific rapid-throughput system to screen bones from mice that lack a single gene. This strategy makes use of existing shared resources at Sanger and greatly reduces the number of mice required."
The team used an approach that looked at many different physical traits and identified a new classification system for bone mutants based on mineral content, strength, and the density and flexibility of bone. The bones from some mutants were found to be brittle, while others were flexible but weak
The Sanger Institute Mouse Genetics Projects, the largest centre for genetically engineered mice, generated the mice strains used in the study. These strains of mice were first screened at the Sanger Institute before being sent on to the other collaborating Institutes for further analysis.
"The Mouse Genetics Project's broad primary trait screen independently identified five genes that when deleted cause bone abnormalities. The other groups used X-ray microradiography, micro-CT and biomechanical testing to further characterise these 5 genes and identified an additional 5 genes that affect bone composition" says Dr Jacqueline White, one of the authors from the Wellcome Sanger Institute. "Our study is an example of where approaching biology without any prior assumptions and looking broadly at the effects of inactivating a gene allows you to find new biological insights that wouldn't be possible in other, more focused studies."
Serendipitously, one of the random genes selected, Sparc, is a well-studied gene whose deletion results in weak, brittle bones. The screen positively identified this gene as affecting bone health and this acted as a well-characterised positive control for the identification of the nine new genes that the study uncovered.
This study demonstrates that the loss of function of the each of these 10 genes can disrupt the structure and composition of bone. This disruption can be classified into three distinct, different categories: weak and flexible bone with low mineral content similar to postmenopausal osteoporosis, weak and brittle with low mineral content similar to osteogenesis imperfecta and high bone mass which is rare in humans.
"This genome-wide approach is extremely exciting and holds great promise for discovery of genetic susceptibilities and influences in bone disease in addition to providing potential targets for drug development" says Jim Lupski MD, PhD, DSc, a medical genomicist and the Cullen Professor and Vice Chair of Genetics at the Baylor College of medicine in Houston, Texas, USA. "As we learn more about common diseases that affect millions of individuals it is apparent that many such conditions can have genetically heterogeneous etiologies. The approach outlined by these investigators, although labour intensive, is a terrific example of the power of functional genomics."
"Human genetics studies require these model organisms to get a better understanding of disease and find plausible targets for treatments. This approach has allowed the teams to gain biological insights into the pathways in the body that may be potential therapeutic targets and, perhaps more importantly, help us to start to understand the biology behind bone structure."
The team are currently applying this same technique to study different disease traits in the eye and the brain. As these models are freely available to researchers worldwide from the Mouse Genetics Project, the hope is that other organisations will use these resources to continue the study of these gene deletions.

Kofi Annan is stepping down as UN Arab League mediator in the 17-month-old Syria conflict at the end of the month, U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon said in a statement on Thursday.
By NBC News staff and wire services
Updated at 6:30 p.m. ET: Kofi Annan blamed "finger pointing and name calling" within the U.N. Security Council among the reasons for his decision on Thursday to quit as the U.N.-Arab League Joint Special Envoy for Syria.
"The world is full of crazy people like me. So don't be surprised if Secretary General Ban Ki-moon can find someone who can do a better job than me," Annan said when asked if he thought someone else would be named to succeed him.
"There may be other plans, other approaches that may work quite effectively," he said, adding that at this stage the focus should still be on a political transition which means "President (Bashar) al-Assad will have to leave sooner or later."
Annan's resignation is effective Aug. 31.
Before Syrian reinforcement troops can reach Aleppo, the nation's largest city and commercial capital, they are being attacked by rebel forces in Arihah, a city situated on a key route. NBC's Richard Engel reports.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement Thursday that Annan deserves "profound admiration for the selfless way in which he has put his formidable skills and prestige to this most difficult and potentially thankless of assignments." He added that the search for a successor is under way.
Judo diplomacy: Putin, Cameron differ on Syria
"The hand extended to turn away from violence in favor of dialogue and diplomacy - as spelled out in the Six-Point Plan - has not been taken, even though it still remains the best hope for the people of Syria," the Secretary-General's statement read.
"Kofi Annan is a very respectable person, a brilliant diplomat and a very decent man, so it's really a shame," Russian President Vladimir Putin said in London, according to Interfax. "But I hope that the international community's efforts aimed at ending the violence will continue."
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Anan worked tirelessly to end Syrian bloodshed and build an "inclusive, post-Assad Syria."
"Unfortunately, the Security Council was blocked from giving him key tools to advance his efforts," she said.?

People resisting the army of President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria cope with loss and prepare for fighting.
Recent days have seen Syria's uprising transformed from an insurgency in remote provinces into a battle for control of the two main cities, Aleppo, and the slightly smaller capital, Damascus, where fighting exploded about two weeks ago.?
Assad's forces have launched massive counter assaults in both cities.
Palestinian camp hit At least 20 people were killed on Thursday when Syrian security forces fired three mortar rounds at a Palestinian camp in Damascus, medical sources said.
Witnesses in the camp told Reuters by telephone that the mortars hit a busy street as people were preparing for the Ramadan meal to break their fasting.
"I saw it all, I was going to my house when the first round hit the street, people ran to check the damage when the second one hit the same area," a resident said.
Josh Hamilton batted just .177/.253/.354 in July, which would be reason enough to think that something?s not quite right with the MVP outfielder. Now add these cryptic comments, uttered by Hamilton late last week following a 1-for-14 homestand:
?When the time is right, I?ll be honest with you, you?ll be right in the loop.?I?ve been shown a lot of things over the past week. There?s disobedience and there?s obedience to God. I?ve been being?disobedient. It may be a small thing to you, but it?s a big thing to him. There?s consequences. It?s like a father and a kid. There are disciplines. You guys can chew on that and think about it.?
Then there?s the even more?cryptic?quote below, offered Wednesday morning on a Dallas radio program by Rangers manager Ron Washington:
?The issue is something that I think Josh would definitely have to be the one to expose. It?s certainly not physical. It has nothing to do with injuries. Josh is the one that made the statement and got all the inquiries going, and I think Josh is the one that has to put a rest to the inquiries, not Ron Washington. I can just tell you one thing: It is not because he?s hurt.?
Commenters on the Rangers-centric blog Baseball Time In Arlington have suggested that Hamilton might be going through a divorce with his wife Katie, through nobody has any facts to back that up. The drug and alcohol?addict had a relapse in February at a bar in Fort Worth but has seemingly kept clean this summer.
Hamilton, 31, is currently scheduled to hit the open market five days after the conclusion of the 2012 World Series. He?ll be one of the most interesting cases in the history of free agency given all that?s taken place.
