To Successfully Launch A Product, You Have To Tell A Compelling Story

42760256_c5376f3cf5_b"The art of narration and dramatic presentation, together with a keen sense of the oral epic style, became a characteristic quality of the Russian people." ?Vladimir Propp, Morphology of the Folktale At the end of a week filled with product launches and press conferences, it's hard not to compare those marketing events. Without even talking about the products, some were much more compelling than others. And it all comes down to the story that you tell, as a company. Failing at that task will greatly endanger your product.

Reports: UK police arrest Gary Glitter

LONDON (AP) ? The sex abuse scandal surrounding the late BBC children's television host Jimmy Savile widened on Sunday as police arrested former glam rock star and convicted sex offender Gary Glitter in connection with the case, British media said.

Police would not directly identify the suspect arrested Sunday, but media including the BBC and Press Association reported he was the 68-year-old Glitter.

The musician made it big with the crowd-pleasing hit "Rock & Roll (Part 2)," a mostly instrumental anthem that has been a staple at American sporting events thanks to its catchy "hey" chorus. But he fell into disgrace after being convicted on child abuse charges in Britain and Vietnam.

On Sunday, the BBC and Sky News showed footage of Glitter, who wore a hat, a dark coat and sunglasses, being taken from his home by officers and driven away.

British police do not generally identify suspects under arrest by name until they are charged. When asked about Glitter, a spokesman said only that the force arrested a man in his 60s early Sunday morning in London on suspicion of sexual offenses in connection with the Savile probe. He remains in custody in a London police station, police said.

Hundreds of potential victims have come forward since police began their investigation into sex abuse allegations against Savile, the longtime host of popular shows "Top of the Pops" and "Jim'll Fix It" who died at age 84 last year. Most allege abuse by Savile, but some said they were abused by Savile and others.

Glitter is the first suspect to be arrested in the scandal, which has raised questions about whether the BBC turned a blind eye to the alleged sexual crimes. It was not immediately clear if Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, and Savile knew each other.

Glitter rose to fame in the 1970s with a string of U.K. hits and his look of shiny jumpsuits, silver platform shoes and bouffant wigs, but his music has often been shunned since his abuse convictions. In 2006, the NFL advised its football teams not to use the Glitter version of "Rock and Roll (Part 2)" at games.

Glitter was jailed in Britain in 1999 for possessing child pornography, and convicted in 2006 in Vietnam of committing "obscene acts with children" ? offenses involving girls aged 10 and 11. He was deported back to Britain in 2008.

Police have said that though the majority of cases it is investigating related to Savile alone, some involved the entertainer and other, unidentified suspects. In addition, some potential victims who reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against unidentified men that did not involve the BBC host.

The scandal has horrified Britain with revelations that Savile cajoled and coerced vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dingy dressing rooms on BBC premises.

One witness told the BBC that she once saw Glitter having sex with a schoolgirl in Savile's dressing room at the broadcaster's TV center in the 1970s. Glitter has denied the allegations.

On Sunday, the chairman of the BBC Trust said he was committed to finding out the true scale of the scandal to save the broadcaster's reputation.

"Can it really be the case that no one knew what he was doing? Did some turn a blind eye to criminality? Did some prefer not to follow up their suspicions because of this criminal's popularity and place in the schedules?" Chris Patten wrote in The Mail on Sunday.

The BBC has set up an independent inquiry into the corporation's culture and practices in the years Savile worked there. It also launched a separate inquiry into whether its journalists dropped an investigation into the allegations.

Why Must Women Not Shy Away From Hair ... - Hair Loss - EzineMark

?While hair loss is a common and expected problem for most aging men, it is not the case for women, who often consider baldness a stigma and find it difficult to accept and handle.Women do not resort to the same treatmentsas men because of the difference in hair loss patterns and the causes of hair loss. While men are likely to lose their hair in the front top of their scalp, women experience a more all-over ?hair thinning?.Since this initially happens across the scalp, it takes time for them to realize that they are losing a substantial amount of hair. Doctors and dermatologists claim that hair loss is as common in women as it isin men and should be treated immediately.

Bosley, the world?s most experienced hair restoration expert, has found that the process of determining suitable hair loss treatments for men and women are similar. Before suggesting a treatment, they measure the intensity of the problem by referring to the Ludwig scale. If it is determined that the hair loss is permanent, and not caused by external factors and stress, then women are likely considered to be candidates of hair transplantation. The sophisticated procedure of micro-grafting at Bosley can provide a restored hairline that looks completely natural. Women who are highly self-conscious about their hair should have no concern as it is impossible for one to distinguish between original and transplanted hair from a Bosleyprocedure. After all, hair restoration takes your own hair as donor and transplant it in areas where more is needed!

According to Bosley, there are around 20 million American women experiencing hair loss in varying degrees.

Bosley provides private and free, no-obligation consultations for women in order to understand their hair loss condition, the cause of the hair loss, and the intensity of the problem before deciding on the right treatment plan. Instead of struggling with hair loss and allowing it to worsen, it is necessary that youvisit a specialist and look into treatment as soon as possible.

The impact of hair loss is at times more damaging to women than it is to men. A study published in the Journal of Women?s Health and Gender-Based Medicine discovered that hair loss in women can heavily lower their self-esteem and self-worth. The most common reason for hair loss in women is telogen effluvium. This disorder occurs in women mostly after pregnancy or due to extreme physical stress. Androgenic alopecia is also a common cause that is genetic in nature and stems from the production of a chemical called dihydrotestosterone in the body. Lack of nutrition and sleep can also trigger this problem. Studies have even blamed crash dieting as a reason for hair loss.

In Aleppo, Syrian rebels wage war ? with an Internet connection

The Syrian father thought he had enough dangers to contend with in his contested city of Aleppo. As darkness fell, sniper fire cracked repeatedly along the street outside. Explosions reverberated across the city.

Two nearby bombs that afternoon had cut off all electricity, so he was standing in the dark at the door of his apartment, children clustered around his feet, when his new neighbors arrived, working their way up the interior stairwell with the light of their mobile phones ? and bearing a satellite dish.

But this wasn?t just another family, traumatized by three months of fighting here between the Assad regime and the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA). It was a small group of rebel media activists, college-aged and determined to use photographs and video to show the result of indiscriminate artillery and aircraft bombardment in Aleppo.

IN PICTURES ? Inside Aleppo, Syria

Making the link to the outside world is about more than surfing the Web for the rebels. Satellite gear and computers have become a critical component of the effort to challenge President Bashar al-Assad and the regime ? and the widespread misperception inside Syria about extent of their reach into people's lives.

The activists were excited as they filed into their dark apartment. ?Internet, Internet!? chanted one, speaking about the illegal high-speed connection they were about to create. Onto the dusty floor of the small front room they threw down cardboard boxes of cables and tools, the modems and laptop that would soon connect them to the world.

For the Syrian father, that link was one danger too many. Almost immediately he knocked on the activists' door.

?There are many children here, you don?t want to be responsible for their deaths,? he told the young men. ?I am with you, my son is in the Free Syrian Army, but?.?

One electronics engineer stopped assembling the dish and came to the door, explaining that the signal blended among many others in Aleppo and was indistinguishable to government forces. They had no problem with the satellite Internet at previous locations for three months, he said.

?We have more knowledge than you in these things, and we work very secretly,? the engineer reassured the man, their faces lit at the doorway by mobile phones. Then he pointed out what is obvious from the pulverization of entire districts of Aleppo, where rebel commanders now claim to control more than 60 percent of the ground: ?The government may shoot this place randomly any day, anyway.?

HIGH CIVILIAN CASUALTIES

Neither side has dramatically moved any of Aleppo?s several frontlines in recent weeks. Instead, daily and nightly artillery bombardment continues of civilian areas ? a bread-line bombing two days ago left 20 dead ? punctuated by MiG jet fighters using heavy, unguided bombs. By all accounts, including those of hospital staff, the majority of victims on this side of the lines are not rebel soldiers, but civilians.

The regime has steadfastly insisted that all revolutionaries and their supporters are ?terrorists? that will be stamped out. Every day, text messages are sent, at least to all mobile-phone lines in Aleppo and Idlib Province to the west, warning citizens to expose the rebels and promising a return to calm.

The ?honest among you? are praised in Aleppo and Idlib, because ?the terrorists are collapsing and your correct thinking is going to make security and safety return to your cities," one text message reads. Another: ?To all who carry weapons against the government, don?t link your fate to those who came with weapons from outside Syria, and don?t let them kill your loved ones, and destroy your home and your country.?

Yet another text portrays government forces as ?heroes? who are ?crushing the terrorists.?

?They are dreaming, it?s like another world,? says the rebel engineer. ?Are we ?terrorists?? Do we look like terrorists??

Much of the satellite gear and computers was paid for and sent by the Syrian National Council (SNC), an umbrella group of opposition factions based in Turkey, along with other donors, the activists say. And they are not alone ? similar media cells work across rebel-held areas, providing real-time images of the destruction that few foreign journalists can reach.

A cheer goes up when they get the satellite dish working: ?YouTube!?

Holding flashlights and mobile phones in their teeth, the activists pick up all the computers, batteries, and the satellite modem, all connected with wires, and carry them triumphantly into a back room, safer from the danger of blasts and bullets.

?He does not have the power he talks about,? says the engineer. ?For 40 years they terrorize all the people of Syria, and say they have all this power to make people afraid. But it is all lies.?

?That is why the neighbor is afraid,? explains another activist, a literature student. ?It got to the point [in the past] where, even if people were sitting privately with family, and said anything against the regime, they would warn each other that ?the walls have ears.? ?

?The regime is so stupid! They can?t find this dish,? says the engineer, as he wrestles into onto the balcony and then checks its alignment with a compass. Other activists watch the computer monitor; everything is plugged into a huge battery for testing.

A friend of the engineer works in the government telecommunications company, and knows that its monitoring abilities are very limited. Hardly any calls are listened to, he says; few can be tracked.

And while the regime is reported to have received specific electronic assistance in this regard from Iran and Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah ? including an ability to pinpoint the source of satellite communications ? the sheer volume of mobile-phone traffic from all sides is simply too much to manage.

For four decades, says the engineer, the Assad family ?made us have fear. He 100 percent successfully made us afraid of him.?

The neighbor children can be heard singing, chanting, and playing next door. Sometimes they fight with each other. Sometimes they call for their father. Next door, the anti-regime media activists settle onto thin mattresses, plug in a hot plate for tea, and begin their work.

Robotic butlers, bartenders and receptionists at Carnegie Mellon (video)

Image

At school like Carnegie Mellon, it sort of figures that you'd find robots just about everywhere, performing the sorts of tasks we've traditionally left to us more fleshy types. In the two days we've spent on campus, we've seen 'bots do just about everything -- some far more autonomously than others. Take Roboceptionist -- the robotic secretary was one of the first intelligent beings we encountered upon arriving on the premises, artificial or otherwise, greeting us from a wooden kiosk near the entrance to Newell-Simon Hall.

The receptionist's creators named him Marion "Tank" Lefleur -- but don't call him "Marion." It's really a sort of a "Boy Named Sue" scenario, and calling him by his birth name is a surefire way of getting on his bad side. When he's not getting irritated, Tank's tasked with helping you find things on campus -- people, halls, food -- by way of a small keyboard. He's got a surprisingly complex backstory that informs his answers. Ask him how his mom and dad are doing and you're bound to get some fairly bizarre responses -- same with more straight forward questions about finding a place to eat on campus, for that matter.

Americans buying fewer new cars over lifetime

Anne Rippy / Getty Images

American consumers will be buying significantly fewer new cars over the course of their lifetimes, a new study predicts.

By Phil LeBeau, CNBC.com

Chalk another one up for the recession and how it has altered life in America. New analysis by the automotive research firm Polk shows Americans can now expect to buy fewer new cars during their lifetime.??

?On average, we?ll buy almost four fewer new cars by the time each of us hits 76 years old, the age when Polk believes most people are done buying new vehicles.?

CNBC.com: Used car prices keep sliding, but for how long?

?The days when you bought a vehicle for 4 or 5 years are likely over,? said Anthony Pratt, Polk director of forecasting.

How much have things changed since before the recession? Here is Pratt?s analysis.

Buying new, but not as often

We?ve talked for some time about Americans holding on to their new cars longer and the reasons have been well-documented. Cars last longer, and as their prices have gone up, people are less inclined to take on a monthly payment. Since the recession they have stretched out the length of time to pay off a new loan. In other words, people now expect to be in their car six, seven or eight years after they buy it.

CNBC.com: Cars that are more expensive used

That?s a dramatic change from a well-established rule in the auto industry. For years, automakers counted on Americans to buy, on average, a new car or truck every three or four years. Some of that was due to our vehicles starting to show their age sooner.?

?When we were younger, we had to replace vehicles out of necessity. That?s not the case anymore," Pratt said. "The vehicles are much better quality, they?re lasting much longer, so really, there is no need to replace vehicles.?

Fewer chances for automakers to retain/steal customers

Because Americans are now forecast to buy fewer new vehicles in their lifetimes, it means automakers will have fewer chances to steal customers.

CNBC.com: China only part of the problem for U.S. auto parts makers

The ?conquest buy,? when one brand persuades a customer to switch from one brand to another brand, has long been a crucial part of building sales and market share. This is how the Japanese automakers, and more recently, the Korean automakers gained market share in the U.S.

That?s tougher with people holding onto their new cars longer. In the past, you would start looking for a new car every three or four years, and when you did you might start looking at several brands, not just the one you were driving.

CNBC.com: 10 bad luck cars

Conversely, since we are going longer between new car purchases, what we want or need in a new model may change more as the years pass. As a result, Pratt said, the brand we are driving may not have the type of vehicle, or styling, we want for the next stage of our life.?

?It?s more difficult to retain a buyer, especially if they?ve changed stages in their lifetime,? Pratt said. ?Their needs for a vehicle may have changed, so they may abandon the brand they?ve driven for many years.??

SUNY: Research Foundation reforms already underway | Politics on ...

Responding to a state Comptroller?s Office audit released Monday, the State University of New York said reforms have already begun to correct problems at the SUNY Research Foundation that are highlighted in the audit.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli?s audit revealed misspending of funds, including that an operations manager for the foundation at Buffalo State College charged $130,887 to his corporate credit card for foreign travel for him and wife and personal items, such as computers, an iPad and groceries. The audit also found that a fund controlled by SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher billed the foundation $27,968, including $13,172 for beverages (mostly alcohol for receptions) and $9,822 to join a private club.

SUNY responded Monday afternoon: ?Over the last two years, SUNY leadership has overseen the most comprehensive review in the history of The Research Foundation, and as a result it is a markedly improved organization,? Zimpher said in a statement. ?From the beginning, SUNY and RF leadership have viewed the audit as an opportunity to acknowledge past problems and pledged full cooperation. The comptroller?s findings are confirmation that change was necessary.

?The RF is moving forward under the new leadership of Dr. Timothy Killeen, a world-renowned scholar and former National Science Foundation assistant director,? Zimpher continued. ?The RF will continue to help capitalize on SUNY?s role as a major driver in building the state?s innovation economy and expanding research for the benefit of all New Yorkers.?

According to the news release, the foundation has adopted new protocols that raise the standards of accountability of officers and employees alike; reviewed its policies and procedures relating to procurement, contractual and transactional work across the operation; strengthened its governance and attracted new members to its board of directors; and reinforced its institutional commitment to the highest standards of integrity and ethical behavior.

A full description of how SUNY said it is addressing issues raised in the audit is as following:

Several points highlighted in the OSC report have already been addressed by Chancellor Zimpher and Dr. Killeen throughout this multi-year reform effort. These include:

? The re-focused use of the so-called ?Chancellor?s Account.? This account was appropriately renamed as the ?Strategic Plan Allocation? to support system-wide initiatives such as cradle-to-career partnerships, educational conferences, student and faculty achievement awards, and the release of SUNY?s annual report card. As is commonplace at any college or university, SUNY hosts events to engage stakeholders and supporters that may include food and beverage expenses. As we stated in our official response to the draft audit, the expenditures were for legitimate SUNY business, and are reasonable and appropriate. The club membership identified as being paid from this account was cancelled voluntarily by the Chancellor in December 2010 before the OSC audit even began and, in fact, OSC itself removed allegations of funds being used for items ?personal in nature? from their final report.

? The continuous review and improvement of the RF control environment to ensure compliance with applicable law and policy. The RF has implemented extensive controls and continuously updates and improves its policies and procedures, including those related to procurement and payroll, to ensure compliance. Recently, the RF recruited new management and board members and enhanced board governance. Further, a new Code of Conduct was issued, policies have gone under review, and a new compliance oversight function has been created. In addition, an Internal Audit team has been developed and is executing a risk-based audit plan, a best practice for concentrating audit activity in high risk areas.

? Ensuring open competition takes place in procuring contracts, and a reasonable price is paid. The RF acknowledges that documentation supporting the issuance of these contracts was, at times, insufficiently detailed and untimely; however, no actual conflicts of interest existed relative to the identified contracts. The vendors hired had the experience and expertise required, reasonable prices were paid, and the contracts were necessary. The RF is taking steps to ensure that any future single or sole source justification is properly documented. In particular, the Honorable Judith Kaye, Retired Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, was retained as counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher, & Flom LLP in New York City by the Executive Committee of the SUNY Board of Trustees to conduct a review and analysis of the Men?s Basketball program at Binghamton University. The single-source contract awarded was not for legal representation of the SUNY Board of Trustees, and therefore could not have fallen under the auspices of the State Attorney General as OSC recommends.

? Termination of the operations manager for the Research Foundation at Buffalo State College. The RF agrees that policy was violated. RF management conducted an in-depth independent review of the referenced activities and took swift and appropriate action including termination from employment and referral to law enforcement. The RF also implemented new controls to help protect against misuse of funds, including fundamental changes in reporting and management and training of Operations Managers.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2012) ? The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain -- rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF -- a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left -- again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

Good reasons to hire a contractor accountant - Journal Of ...

admin | October 20, 2012 |

There are several reasons you may wish to hire an accountant on contract. The foremost reason maybe that you can?t afford a fulltime accountant in your payroll. Another important reason may be that you want to find ways to control your costs, minimize tax payment, and maximize profit. Whatever reasons you may have, contractor accountants from reputed accounting firms can help you achieve all of your goals. They also cost you less than a fulltime accountant as they only charge you by the hours or for specific tasks.

Here are some of the good reasons you should hire a contractor accountant from a reputed accounting firm:

  • Economy of time and money: Hiring a contractor accountant saves you time and money. Doing your own accounting is tedious and time-consuming work even if you know how to do it, and it?s a waste of time you could put to productive work. An accountant permanently in the payroll is a drain on your resources. When you hire an accountant on contract, you need pay him only for a specific task or a period of time.
  • Correct bookkeeping: Being professionals, contractor accountants are very precise and do not overlook anything. They follow the correct procedures and practices in every step. Be it payroll, tax computation or year-end accounts, they do it with accuracy and finesse that you can?t achieve. Correct accounting helps make correct decisions that are essential for the growth of the company.
  • Minimize tax payment: Many individuals and companies end up paying more tax than they need to because to lack of adequate knowledge of taxes. As you may be well aware of, taxes eat into a company?s profit. Experienced accountants know all about taxes and how to minimize the payment so that you won?t have to pay a penny more than necessary. This saves money and increases the company?s profit margin.
  • Gain credibility: Hiring a well-known and trusted accounting firm gives your company credibility in the eyes of government authorities and clients. When filing tax returns, you are more likely to avoid scrutiny if your documents are prepared by accountants from trusted accounting firms. You will also gain the trust and respect of the company?s shareholders and clients.
  • For the growth of the company: Experienced accountant do not only prepare accounts and compute payroll and taxes, they also provide you advice on how to streamline and structure your budget. Such advice can help you cut cost and maximize profit. As well-known accounting firms have many other clients from diverse fields, they can recommend your name to their other clients, which is free advertizing and good for business.

As there are many accounting firms advertising their service, it is not easy to choose the correct one. However, there are ways to select the most suitable one for your specific need. Recommendation from trusted friends and business associates is always worth giving a try. However, the other things to look at are areas of expertise and years of experience. You don?t want to hire someone who has little or no experience in the area that you want service. For this, you need to do a market research and talk to the accounting firms personally. In short, hire only the contractor who you think has the knowledge and experience to carry out the task entrusted to him.

How to Measure Awareness Advertising | Business 2 Community

If customers don?t know you exist your chances of attracting them are the same as trying to teach an elephant to tap dance.

This is the first rule in marketing ? make sure your potential customers are aware of who you are, what you stand for and how you can help solve their problems.

However it is much easier said than done. These days the media choices can be overwhelming, check out the image below that identifies the different social media options alone!

Social Media Map from Brian Solis and JESS3Source: Brian Solis and JESS3 http://www.theconversationprism.com/

Add to this social media mix, the traditional media ? TV, print, radio and billboards and you have some difficult decisions to make.

Where should I invest to generate maximum awareness for minimum cost? and How will I know whether these investments are paying off?

Deciphering the impact of advertising is notoriously difficult, there is a classic saying in advertising circles attributed to the father of advertising, John Wanamaker who said:

?Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don?t know which half.?

Awareness advertising is designed to widen the pool of potential customers and remind them of how you can help them. The goal is to position a company?s brand favorably and regularly in the customer?s mind.

The measurement challenge comes from the fact that it is not necessarily designed to elicit an immediate response. Regardless there are a few ways you can get a handle on the impact of this type of advertising:

1. Prospect Surveys Before and After Comparisons

This technique involves establishing a baseline and then comparing results against that baseline over time.

For example, a simple survey may highlight that 10% of prospects have heard of your brand and 15% may consider you as a potential supplier of the product. The consideration metric is an important one to include as we are not interested in awareness alone. We really want to know whether we are in the ?evoked set? ? the top 2 or 3 brands customers have as top of mind for any particular product category.

Asking these questions again in 3 months may reveal that now 25% of prospects have heard of your brand and 30% of them would consider you as a potential provider.

You can reasonably conclude that your advertising activities were a significant driver responsible for the increase.

2. Asking Customers at their Point of Inquiry

Many companies will ask a new customer how they heard of the company or product. This is a great technique for companies that get a lot of inbound calls, a quick question can be asked at the end of the call to which most customers are happy to respond.

To go a little deeper a survey can be conducted asking customers which specific media they remember seeing. Their answers won?t tell you whether the activity influenced their purchase, but it will tell you which of your awareness advertising activities are being noticed.

To understand the advertising?s influence, we can design questions to elicit feedback on the messages sent.

For example ?which of the following ads have you seen?, which haven?t you seen?, rank each on a scale of 1 to 5 on whether it appealed to you or not.

Next total up the answers from all survey takers to give you a clear picture of how people perceive your advertising.

NOTE: Where ever possible please do some of this in pre-testing to make sure you are eliciting the response you want!

The Brotherhood Of Web Development And W... - Work On the Internet

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Friday, 19 October 2012 06:05 On a broad scale, web development includes the process of web designing, as the development of a website will include the process of designing. But the skills that a professional needs for web development jobs are different than those for web designing work. Still we will say that it is a brotherhod of professionals as one cannot live without the other.

Like in a brotherhood, every member will have a defined role in the organization, so does every person in a web development organization. There will be developers as well as designers who will be skill-ready for professional work in their own domains. Like in a Venn diagram these domains may overlap at some functions but majorly remain different. They need to maintain an understanding of each other???s capabilities as well as roles.
The creativity and artistic streaks need to be showed in produced designs by a good web designer. The creative streak needs to be individualistic but the integration of the designs needs to be possible, and the designs should be attractive as well as productive. Then the role of a web development professional starts, the logic of these designs and integration into the website development procedure. The production and maintenance of the website will involve web development skills.

Very similar to human brain the web development and web designing are the two sides which together form a good website development organization. They need to work together with synchronization and understanding so as to reduce the work load and increase the throughput of the organization. If there is some communication gap or misunderstanding between the two teams then the resultant product will have a bad design as well as bad functionality.
The term web designing is generally given to the design process relating to the front-end (client side) design of a website including writing mark up, and this is the grey area which causes troubles in the brotherhood. As it is the responsibility of both the web designing and web development teams. The back-end (user side) is solely handled by the developer and the work is generally not seen by the client other than the functionality which the user will feel and observe.
The look is governed by the designer whereas the feel is governed by the developer. The user???s interaction while observing the graphics, images, designs, etc. is affected by the skill level of the web designing which has been done on the website. Whereas the client???s experience with the features, working, user-experience, etc. will be governed by the development teams skills. When both of them work in unity, they produce marvels which are a delight to the user as well as the client, to the customers as well as the customers of the customer.
In the world of website development, all the members need to work efficiently in order to bring smiles to the internet users. Brotherhood of web designers and developers has been united since the dawn of web services and will remain so till the internet survives.

Springs highway case ends with Douglas County crash | police ...

A fight at a local tattoo parlor led to an Interstate 25 chase, as Colorado Springs police and Colorado State Patrol searched for a possible shooting victim.

Just after 7 p.m. on Saturday shots were reported at the Pins and Needles Tattoo, at 3737 Drennan Road, where police were told that a man was shot. Police found no shooting victim, just shell casings and the front bumper that was sitting in the lot off a car stolen from Denver, police said.

The tattoo parlor was hosting a rap contest, featuring artists from around the country, police said. Witnesses told police that one rapper got in an argument with others, and then walked to his car in the parking lot, and shots were fired at him. He drove away, leaving his bumper behind.

Shortly afterwards, Colorado State Patrol troopers reported that they were chasing the bumperless car north on Interstate 25, into Douglas County. The pursuit ended in a crash.

There was no further information available from either agency at 9:30 p.m.

Timing of First Sex Has Far-Reaching Relationship Effects | Psych ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on October 18, 2012

Timing of First Sex Has Far-Reaching Relationship EffectsResearch looking at how the timing of sexual initiation in adolescence impacts adult romantic ties finds that having sex later may lead to better relationships.

In a new study, Dr. Paige Harden, a psychological scientist, investigated how the timing of sexual initiation in adolescence influences romantic outcomes ? such as whether people get married or live with their partners, how many romantic partners they?ve had, and whether they?re satisfied with their relationship ? later in adulthood.

To answer this question, Harden and colleagues from the University of Texas at Austin used data from the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health to look at 1659 same-sex sibling pairs who were followed from adolescence (around 16) to young adulthood (around 29).

Each sibling was classified as having an Early (younger than 15), On-Time (age 15-19), or Late (older than 19) first experience with sexual intercourse.

Harden?s findings are reported in a new research article published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

As expected, later timing of first sexual experience was associated with higher educational attainment and higher household income in adulthood when compared with the Early and On-Time groups.

Individuals who had a later first sexual experience were also less likely to be married and they had fewer romantic partners in adulthood.

Among the participants who were married or living with a partner, later sexual initiation was associated with significantly lower levels of relationship dissatisfaction in adulthood.

Researchers found that these associations with a later sex experience were not changed when genetic and environmental factors were taken into account. Furthermore, the associations could not be explained by differences in adult educational attainment, income, or religiousness, or by adolescent differences in dating involvement, body mass index, or attractiveness.

Experts believe the results suggest that the timing of first experience with sexual intercourse predicts the quality and stability of romantic relationships in young adulthood.

Although investigators have often focused on the consequences of early sexual activity, the Early and On-Time participants in this study were largely indistinguishable.

Researchers say the data suggests early initiation is not a ?risk? factor so much as late initiation is a ?protective? factor in shaping romantic outcomes.

According to Harden, there are several possible mechanisms that might explain this relationship.

It?s possible, for example, that people who have their first sexual encounter later also have certain characteristics (e.g., secure attachment style) that have downstream effects on both sexual delay and on relationship quality.

They could be pickier in choosing romantic and sexual partners, resulting in a reluctance to enter into intimate relationships unless they are very satisfying.

It?s also possible, however, that people who have their first sexual encounter later have different experiences, avoiding early encounters with relational aggression or victimization that would otherwise have detrimental effects on later romantic outcomes.

Finally, Harden said that it?s possible that ?individuals who first navigate intimate relationships in young adulthood, after they have accrued cognitive and emotional maturity, may learn more effective relationship skills than individuals who first learn scripts for intimate relationships while they are still teenagers.?

Experts say that additional research is needed to help to tease apart which of these mechanisms may actually be at work in driving the association between timing of first sexual intercourse and later romantic outcomes.

Prior studies by Harden and her colleagues have provided evidence that earlier sexual intercourse isn?t always associated with negative outcomes.

For example, using the same sample from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, she found that teenagers who experienced their first sexual intercourse earlier, particularly those who had sex in a romantic dating relationship, had lower levels of delinquent behavior problems.

She said, ?We are just beginning to understand how adolescents? sexual experiences influence their future development and relationships.?
