Cher: 'DWTS' Judges' Treatment of Chaz "Pissed" Me Off

Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba might not have thought fellow judge Bruno Tonioli was being rude when he referred to recently-voted-off contestant Chaz Bono as a "penguin," but Bono's mom Cher certainly does. Bono, 42, was on Anderson Cooper's daytime talk show Anderson to chat about DWTS when Cooper called up Chaz's 65-year-old pop star mother to hear her thoughts about her son's treatment.

(AP) ? Attorneys have begun whittling down the pool of potential jurors in the trial of a woman accused of murdering a man as part of a plot to frame her first husband.

Prosecutors and attorneys for Tracy Richter picked 32 of the 100 possible jurors to begin questioning Tuesday at the outset of her trial.

Richter says she fatally shot 20-year-old Dustin Wehde in 2001 after he and another man broke into her former Iowa home and assaulted her.

Prosecutors contend that Richter killed Wehde and planted a notebook in his car meant to implicate her first husband in a murder-for-hire plot.

She has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and would face a mandatory life prison term if convicted.

Spammers create and launch URL shortening services to hide links (Digital Trends)

spam, phishing, security

According to new information from researchers at?Symantec, a group of spammers have created a group of 87 spam-friendly, public URL shortening services and are actively using them to circumvent spam filters on popular sites. Using URL shortening scripts that are free and open source, the spammers are churning spam through the service and the public is also free to create links through the URL shorteners, perhaps an attempt to pass off the links as legitimate. All the URL shorteners are using the .info domain and are being operated through contacts in Moscow as well as a hosting company in the United Kingdom.

Spam in mailboxThe links have primarily been appearing in emails with the header titles ?It?s a long time since I saw you last!? and ?It?s a good thing you came!?. Once the shortened link is clicked, the user is whisked off to a site like ??Pharmacy Express? that promotes the sale of?pharmaceutical products. This new tactic by the group of spammers is likely a response?to vast improvements in spam detection from popular URL shortening sites. In the month of October, approximately 0.5 percent of all spam emails used?legitimate?URL shorteners to hide links with spikes of two to three percent on specific days during the month.?

Also included in the report from?Symantec, approximately 74 percent of email sent in October 2011 was spam. One out of every 343 emails were identified as phishing attempts and one out of every 235 emails contained some form of malware. Over 3,000 sites were blocked each day by Symantec, but that?s approximately a four percent decrease compared to September 2011. The United States contained the largest number of spammers in the world at about 34 percent of all spammers.?Pharmaceutical?spam was at the top of the list for the most common type of spam with casino and gambling emails in second and?jewelry?spam in third.

German lawmakers win full say on EFSF (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? German lawmakers flexed their muscles to secure a full parliamentary vote Wednesday on euro zone crisis measures negotiated by Chancellor Angela Merkel and her euro zone peers, a move senior politicians said would give Merkel a stronger mandate.

The new vote comes just one month after Germany's Bundestag (lower of house of parliament) approved greater powers for the euro zone rescue fund, and should pass without problems, but it risks delaying Europe's response to the debt crisis at a crucial juncture.

Merkel cannot agree to changes to the 440 billion euro European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) without approval at least from the Bundestag's budget committee, as a result of a constitutional court decision last month.

However, Merkel's Christian Democrats' (CDU) floor leader Volker Kauder demanded a full debate and vote by the German Bundestag (lower house of parliament) rather than just a vote by the 41-member budget committee, which might have been quicker and less risky while still meeting new rules on consulting MPs.

"On such important questions it's good if parliament gives the chancellor broad backing for her negotiations," said Kauder regarding the vote due early Wednesday, before Merkel returns to Brussels for a second, decisive euro summit.

Major opposition parties the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Greens welcomed the vote, and indicated they would back proposals aimed at countering the debt crisis. But they stopped short of confirming they would vote "yes," saying they needed to see documents detailing the proposals first.

With criticism ringing in Germany's ears from the head of the Eurogroup of single currency members, Jean-Claude Juncker, about it being slow to make decisions, Merkel met the heads of the main parties to seek consensus.

Juergen Trittin, parliamentary co-leader of the opposition Greens, said Merkel had told them the haircut for Greece would be "above 50 and below 60" percent and that leveraging of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) could be above 1 trillion euros.

Merkel will address parliament before the vote and before returning to Brussels for what should be a more decisive summit on boosting the firepower of the EFSF, raising the contribution of private banks to Greece's rescue, and getting European banks to increase their own capital to prevent contagion.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, head of the SPD parliamentary group criticized the fact that lawmakers were still waiting to see full proposals.

"We are still not able to talk of concrete texts... Therefore I am not in a position to talk conclusively or to tell you how the SPD will vote this week in parliament," he told reporters.

BATTLING MERKEL

The Chancellor's supporters praised her for getting France to drop demands to use the European Central Bank to leverage euro crisis funds, and there was broader support also for a leader often accused of dithering.

"Merkel's Battle for our Euro," was Monday's headline in the mass-circulation conservative paper Bild, saying she taught France's Nicolas Sarkozy "that the EFSF rescue fund cannot be used to print money" to solve the debt crisis.

"The chancellor must stick to her guns -- in the interests of Germany and of Europe," said the newspaper.

Her conservative bloc's chief whip, Peter Altmaier, said Sunday's summit "made headway" on all three issues, including "using the EFSF to avoid having to print money," and it should now be possible to produce the "comprehensive" crisis response that Merkel and Sarkozy have promised by the end of this month.

"The chancellor negotiated well in Brussels. She showed strong leadership," Altmaier told reporters.

"The French president says he sees things just like Angela and I see that as progress," said the conservative premier of Hesse state, Volker Bouffier. "Germany and France must take the same line as the most important two countries."

Sarkozy ceded to German insistence at Sunday's summit that the ECB should not be used to fight the crisis, which poses an especially big threat to French banks and France's triple-A sovereign debt rating.

Instead, an EU paper obtained by Reuters suggested the euro zone would take up Germany's proposal of boosting the EFSF's firepower by using it as a form of debt insurance, combined with seeking help from emerging market economies like China and Brazil via a special purpose investment vehicle (SPIV) to prop up the euro zone's secondary bond market.

Merkel's spokesman Steffen Seibert said these two options, which had no ECB involvement, were the only two left on the table for leveraging the EFSF and would be discussed by the summit Wednesday. He said they were not mutually exclusive.

China says trade with NKorea has nearly doubled (AP)

BEIJING ? China says trade with its close ally North Korea nearly doubled in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period in 2010.

The official Xinhua News Agency says the 87 percent increase was announced Sunday at the start of a visit to the North by Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang that reaffirms strong ties between the two countries.

North Korea relies heavily on China for food and fuel aid, as well as many ordinary consumer products. Chinese companies are the main investors in North Korean mining operations, and the sides recently signed agreements on road building and jointly developing an industrial park on an island near the Chinese city of Dandong.

Xinhua gave no other details in its report.

Say DOE broke the law ? so what? (Politico)

House Republicans can scream all they want that the Energy Department broke the law when it changed the terms of Solyndra?s $535 million loan guarantee, putting taxpayers on the hook first if the company went under.

But can anyone do much about it?

Probably not ? at least not legally.

Unlike laws?such as?the Clean Air Act, which allows citizens to sue the?EPA for possible violations, the Energy Policy Act of 2005 that created DOE's loan guarantee program doesn't provide a similar outlet for someone who claims a law was broken.

"Certainly there's some mileage to be gained by making the argument that DOE exceeded its statutory authority, but beyond that, I'm not exactly sure what the actual repercussions would be from that," said Salo Zelermyer, a former DOE attorney during the George W. Bush administration.

Granted, the Obama administration says it was well within its legal bounds when DOE agreed in February to change the terms of Solyndra's loan guarantee so that private investors could recoup about $75 million before the taxpayers if the California solar company went bankrupt.

Susan Richardson, the chief counsel of DOE's loan program office, concluded in a February memo that the move "offers the best prospect of eventual repayment in full ... and is demonstrably preferable to a liquidation of the borrower."

But Republicans counter with their own interpretation of the 2005 energy law, saying DOE had no wiggle room to let the private investors cut to the front of the line. At the same time, they also acknowledge they can?t do much about it in the courtroom.

"Although there's language in the EPACT as I understand it to prevent subordination of the loan, there's really no penalty for doing so, so that's a little troublesome," Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas) told POLITICO last week.

Several other critics of the Solyndra loan guarantee said they are limited in their options, too ? beyond making a big stink.

"Taxpayers don't have standing just because it's taxpayer money," said Autumn Hanna, senior program director at Taxpayers for Common Sense.

"The recourse that makes sense is for lawmakers to change this bad policy," she added.

Nokia loss not as bad as feared (AP)

HELSINKI ? Nokia Corp. narrowed its losses more than anticipated during the third quarter even though its smartphone sales continued to suffer in the face of stiff competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone.

Finland's biggest company reported a third-quarter net loss of euro68 million ($94 million). Though that's a big reverse from last year's equivalent profit of euro529 million, it represented an improvement on the second quarter's euro368 million loss.

However, the loss was not as big as many in the markets feared and shares in the company jumped more than 12 percent on the news before closing up more than 5 percent at euro4.72 ($6.52) on the Helsinki Stock Exchange on Thursday.

"Nokia is down but not out. Volume shipments were above expectations, profit decline not quite as bad as expected and some regional numbers surging," said Neil Mawston from London-based Strategy Analytics. "There are signs of some stabilization here."

Despite signs of encouragement, Nokia continues to suffer from heavy competition in the smartphone market. Its sales of smartphones dropped 39 percent to euro2.2 billion, from euro3.6 billion a year earlier, knocking overall revenue by 13 percent to euro8.9 billion.

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was more upbeat than he has been of late, saying Nokia's smartphone portfolio "performed well" despite the huge drop in sales and that it had gained market share in some markets, including India, where it sold 18 million dual SIM card handsets in the quarter.

"In Q3 we started to see signs of early progress in many areas. We made some difficult decisions but we also celebrated some early moments of success," Elop said in a conference call. "As we head into the fourth quarter we are looking forward to generating more success as a result of delivering against our new strategy."

Nokia, which used to hold the innovative edge in the mobile market, has been losing the race in the smartphone sector, as it is being squeezed in the low end market by Asian manufacturers like ZTE and in the high end by the iPhone and Research in Motion's Blackberry devices.

The company is hoping to partly remedy that with a new Windows Phone 7, expected to be launched next week in London after it opened a partnership with Microsoft Corp. in February.

But analysts have said it would take a few quarters before Nokia's success can be measured.

To cut costs in the face of fierce competition, Nokia announced more than 10,000 layoffs this year in an attempt to reduce operating expenses by euro1 billion by 2013. It has not ruled out more cutbacks.

It has also dropped phone prices, with the average selling price of mobile devices falling to euro51 in the quarter, from euro65 a year earlier.

Reflecting the lower prices, volume sales in Asia-Pacific, previously Nokia's second-largest market area, grew 17 percent to take the top spot, while the Asia-Pacific region saw a volume surge of 41 percent. Volume sales in Europe, which had been Nokia's top selling region, fell 30 percent.

Nokia has been the world's top cell phone maker since 1998 selling 432 million devices last year ? more than its three closest rivals combined. But after reaching its announced global goal of 40 percent market share in 2008, it has been struggling against rivals making cheaper handsets in Asia. That sent Nokia's market share below 30 percent earlier this year.

In the second quarter it had a total market share of 24 percent, ahead of South Korea's Samsung Electronics which had an almost 21 percent share.

It said the lower volumes were due to the "strong momentum of competing smartphone platforms" relative to Nokia's higher priced Symbian devices, as well as "pricing tactics by certain competitors."

The Espoo-based company, near Helsinki, employs 136,000 people ? up from 132,000 a year ago.

'Day of the Dead' expanding in US (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico ? Growing up in South Texas, Kiko Torres saw the Day of the Dead as an obscure holiday celebrated in southern Mexico. Few people dared to discuss it in his small but strong Catholic, Mexican-American community.

Still, Torres said he became fascinated by Day of the Dead folk art and ceremonies he saw during his father's research trips to Mexico. Those images of dancing skeleton figurines and the event's spiritual messages of honoring the dead, he said, were misunderstood in the United States.

"People here thought it was something to be scared of or evil," said Torres.

But that's changing. In the last decade or so, this traditional Latin American holiday with indigenous roots has spread throughout the U.S. along with migration from Mexico and other countries where it is observed. Not only are U.S.-born Latinos adopting the Day of the Dead, but various underground and artistic non-Latino groups have begun to mark the Nov. 1-2 holidays through colorful celebrations, parades, exhibits and even bike rides and mixed martial arts fights.

In Houston, artists hold a "Day of the Dead Rock Stars" where they pay homage to departed singers like Joey Ramone, Johnny Cash and even "El Marvin Gaye." Community centers in Los Angeles build altars for rapper Tupac Shakur and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

"It's everywhere now," said Carlos Hernandez, 49, a Houston-based artist who launched the "Day of the Dead Rock Stars" event. "You can even get Dia de los Muertos stuff at Wal-Mart."

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, honors departed souls of loved ones who are welcomed back for a few intimate hours. At burial sites or intricately built altars, photos of loved ones are centered on skeleton figurines, bright decorations, candles, candy and other offerings such as the favorite foods of the departed. Pre-Columbian in origin, many of the themes and rituals now are mixtures of indigenous practices and Roman Catholicism.

The holiday is celebrated in Mexico, Guatemala, Brazil and parts of Ecuador.

Leading up to the day, bakers make sugar skulls and sweet "bread of the dead," and artists create elaborate paper cut-out designs that can be hung on altars. Some families keep private night-long vigils at burial sites.

In North America, decorations often center on images of La Calavera Catrina ? a skeleton of an upper-class woman whose image was made popular by the late-Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada. She is typically seen on photos or through papier-mache statues alongside other skeletal figures in everyday situations like playing soccer, dancing or getting married. La Catrina is the most popular recreated figure related to the holiday.

"She is our best-selling item," said Torres, 35, who owns the Masks y Mas in Albuquerque, a shop that sells Day of the Dead art and clothing year-round. "I have artists sending me their Catrina pieces from all over."

Albuquerque's National Hispanic Cultural Center hosts an annual "Dia de los Muertos Community Gathering," featuring many of the artists from Masks y Mas. The community "ofrenda" ? the term for a Day of the Dead offering or homemade altar ? features blessings, live music and poetry, Oct. 17-Nov. 8. The center also is exhibiting an altar by Mexican-American novelist Sandra Cisneros dedicated to her mother.

The city also hosts an annual parade where marchers dress in Day of the Dead gear and makeup, and it organizes a "Day of the Tread" bike and marathon race.

The exhibits and events are not limited to the Southwest. Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology has a Day of the Dead altar on permanent display and offers Day of the Dead art classes to students in second to eighth grades. And in New York City, the Brooklyn Arts Council recently initiated a year-long Day of the Dead education project to heighten public awareness "on mourning and remembrance."

The growing Latin American population in the U.S. and the increased influence of Hispanic culture here in everything from food to TV programming are obviously major factors in the growth of Day of the Dead celebrations. But the holiday's increased popularity may also coincide with evolving attitudes toward death, including a move away from private mourning to more public ways of honoring departed loved ones, whether through online tributes or sidewalk memorials.

"I think it has to do with Sept. 11," said Albuquerque, N.M.-based artist Kenny Chavez. "We're all looking at death differently, and the Day of the Dead allows us to talk about it."

For some in the U.S., the Day of the Dead remains personal as they use the occasion to remember close loved ones. But for others, it's a chance to honor late celebrities or just an opportunity to dress up as a favorite Day of the Dead character.

Chavez said those unfamiliar with the event sometimes freeze when they first see Day of the Dead images. "We have people come into the shop and ask if this about the occult or devil worshipping," said Chavez, who works at Masks y Mas. "They get all weirded out until you explain what this is."

It's also become a business outside of the holiday period. Torres said part of his business out of Masks y Mas was embroidering muerta images on the shorts and gloves of mixed martial arts fighters. "They can't get enough of it," he said.

Torres said white and Native American artists are also now creating artwork around Day of the Dead themes. "It all about understanding the meaning of the day," he said. "They can take chances with the art."

But as Day of the Dead grows in presence, some fear that the spiritual aspects of the holiday are being lost. Already in Oaxaca, Mexico, where Day of the Dead is one of the most important holidays of the year, the area is annually overrun by U.S. and European tourists who crowd cemeteries to take photos of villagers praying at burial sites. Art dealers also buy cheap crafts, then resell them at much higher prices at chic shops in the U.S.

Oscar Lozoya, 57, an Albuquerque-based photographer who shoots fine art photographs of La Catrina, said some newcomers to the holiday are merely using it as an excuse to party and dress up in skeleton costumes. He hopes that they eventually do their research.

"I know what it means and its importance," said Lozoya, who hosts an annual Day of the Dead art show. "So I think the more people look beyond the art and learn about it, the more people will understand its real significance."

Researchers trace evolution of diversity in Hawaiian Honeycreepers

ScienceDaily (Oct. 20, 2011) ? An international team of scientists has determined the evolutionary family tree for one of the most strikingly diverse and endangered bird families in the world, the Hawaiian honeycreepers.

Using one of the largest DNA datasets for a group of birds and employing next-generation sequencing methods, the team which included Professor Michi Hofreiter, of the University of York, determined the types of finches from which the honeycreeper family originally evolved, and linked the timing of that rapid evolution to the formation of the four main Hawaiian Islands.

The research, which will be published in the latest edition of Current Biology on 8 November, also involved scientists from the Smithsonian Institution and Earlham College in the USA and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig.

There were once more than 50 species of these colourful songbirds that were so diverse that historically it was unclear that they were all part of the same group.

Professor Hofreiter, of the Department of Biology at the University of York, said: "Honeycreepers probably represent the most impressive example of an adaptive radiation in vertebrates that has led to a number of beak shapes unique among birds. In our study we are, for the first time, able to resolve the relationships of the species within this group and thereby understand their evolution."

Heather Lerner, an assistant professor of biology at Earlham College, added: "Some eat seeds, some eat fruit, some eat snails, some eat nectar. Some have the bills of parrots, others of warblers, while some are finch-like and others have straight, thin bills. So the question that we started with was how did this incredible diversity evolve over time?"

The answer is unique to the Hawaiian Islands, which are part of a conveyor belt of island formation due to volcanic activity, with new islands popping up as the conveyor belt moves northwest. Each island that forms represents a blank slate for evolution, so as one honeycreeper species moves from one island to a new island, those birds encounter new habitat and ecological niches that may cause them to adapt and branch off into distinct species. The researchers examined the evolution of the Hawaiian honeycreepers after the formation of Kauai-Niihau, Oahu, Maui-Nui and Hawaii. The largest burst of evolution into new species, called a radiation, occurred between 4 million and 2.5 million years ago, after Kauaii-Niihua Oahu formed but before the remaining two large islands existed, and resulted in the evolution of six of 10 distinct types of species.

Co-author Helen James, a research zoologist at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History "This radiation is one of the natural scientific treasures that the archipelago offers out in the middle of the Pacific. It was fascinating to be able to tie a biological system to geological formation and allowed us to become the first to offer a full picture of these birds' adaptive history."

Using genetic data from 28 bird species that seemed similar to the honeycreepers morphologically, genetically or that shared geographic proximity, the researchers determined that the various honeycreeper species evolved from Eurasian rosefinches. Unlike most other ancestral bird species that came from North America and colonized the Hawaiian Islands, the rosefinch likely came from Asia, the scientists found.

Rob Fleischer, head of Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute's Center for Conservation and Evolutionary Genetics said: "There is a perception that there are no species remaining that are actually native to Hawaii, but these are truly native birds that are scientifically valuable and play an important and unique ecological function. I'm thrilled that we finally had enough DNA sequence and the necessary technology to become the first to produce this accurate and reliable evolutionary tree."

The diversity of Hawaiian honeycreepers has taken a huge hit, with more than half of the known 56 species already extinct. The researchers focused on the 18 surviving honeycreeper species but of those, six are considered critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, four are considered endangered and five are vulnerable.

Professor Hofreiter said: "It is a tragedy that most species from this unique group of birds, one of the best examples of the power of natural selection we have on earth, are extinct or on the brink of extinction. We still have time to take actions to conserve the diversity that is left."

The next, step in the research is to use museum specimens and subfossil bones to determine where the extinct species fit into the evolutionary family tree, or phylogeny, to see if the new lineages fit into the overall pattern found in the current study. DNA analysis for the current study used specialized protocols developed by Professor Hofreiter and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute.

Tone Loc collapses after playing hit song

Doing the "Wild Thing" is getting to be a little too much for Tone Loc these days.

The 45-year-old rapper was hospitalized for exhaustion Saturday night after collapsing on stage during a concert in Atlanta.

Here's what happened.

MORE: Tone Loc Passes Out Doing His "Wild Thing"

Tone, real name Anthony Terrell Smith, fell ill and passed out shortly after performing his big '80s hit, "Funky Cold Medina." He was taken to a local hospital where he was given an IV and rehydrated.

"Tone was extremely exhausted after doing so many shows over the last few months and he did collapse on stage," his manager Bobby Bessone tells E! News, adding that the MC is "fine" now.

This isn't the first time Tone Loc has been hit with exhaustion. The same thing happened to the hitmaker in May 2009 during a gig in Pensacola Beach, and his camp chalked up the malady then to jet lag and heat-related exhaustion.

Let's hope it's just that this time around.

Tone has also been under some legal pressure of late, pleading no contest on Oct. 3. to assault-weapon possession and domestic violence for allegedly hitting his baby mama, charges that earned him a day in county jail and three years' formal probation.

Tone Loc's health scare comes a day after fellow hip-hopster Rick Ross ended up in sick bay after suffering a pair of seizures on two separate flights.

Goodell says NFL hoping to add 2nd game in London

(AP) ? NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is interested in adding a second regular-season game in London and says the move will be discussed at the owners meetings this week.

"It's been tremendously successful," Goodell said before the Buffalo Bills' game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. "Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, and we want to build on that."

The commissioner said the league was happy with the game it played in Mexico City in 2005 ? the first regular-season game outside the United States ? but noted the NFL is focusing on adding a regular-season game in England.

The league played its first regular-season game in London in 2007 when the New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins 13-10. Since then, there have been three other annual games played at Wembley Stadium, and on Oct. 23 the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will take on the Chicago Bears in the English capital.

Goodell said that game is still not sold out, but attributed it to tickets not going on sale until after the lockout ended.

The commissioner touched on several other topics during a 35-minute question-and-answer session with about 100 Bills season-ticket holders in a large suite overlooking the field.

With the Oakland Raiders flag flying at half-staff before the game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, Goodell continued to pay tribute to Raiders owner Al Davis, who died Saturday.

Goodell said a moment of silence will be held prior to every game this weekend. He added, the Raiders are making plans to honor Davis by adding a designation to their uniforms.

"He really was a legend of the game," Goodell said. "There's not many people who had the kind of impact on the game. He was a commissioner, he was an owner, he was a coach, he was a general manager, and he was passionate about the game of football. He loved the NFL as much as anybody I know."

Goodell also is happy with the "Bills In Toronto" games in which Buffalo is in the fourth year of a five-year agreement to play eight games ? including five regular-season games ? at Rogers Centre.

"I really think right now our focus would be on making what we've done here with the Bills playing the one game ? and the preseason game every other year ? into Toronto successful," he said. "The more we work on that and focus on that makes it even better for this market and for Toronto, because for us it's all one region in many ways."

Goodell also reiterated his confidence, and provided the biggest assurance so far, that the Bills will stay in Buffalo. Bills owner Ralph Wilson has said that he will not sell the team as long as he is still living.

"I hope Mr. Wilson's going to be around owning this team for a long time," Goodell said. "I spoke to him on Friday. ... Talk about a guy who loves the game of football, loves this community and loves the Bills. He has what he thinks are the right steps for the team. We will obviously work with him and work with the team to fulfill his wishes. I know he will do, and we are confident that we will do, what's in the best interest of this community and the NFL in general. I think that's being taken care of."

Wilson, who turns 93 this month, broke his hip in June and the injury prevented him from attending the Bills' first two home games.

Goodell, who is from nearby Jamestown, N.Y., attended Sunday's game with friends and family members, including his brother Bill. He planned to watch the game from the stands.

"It's a great stadium to watch the game," he said. "The Bills, the state and the county have done a great job in continuing to make improvements in the stadium to keep it competitive. But you have to continue to do that."

Cards beat Oswalt to force Game 5 against Phillies (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? David Freese joked that he probably had accumulated 20 strikeouts against various Phillies aces.

Easy to poke fun at yourself after a breakout game that toppled Cardinals playoff nemesis Roy Oswalt and forced a deciding fifth game against Philadelphia.

Freese became a hometown hero on Wednesday night with a home run, double and four RBIs to lead St. Louis to a 5-3 victory over the Phillies.

"It's unbelievable where we've come from," said Freese, who was 2 for 12 with one RBI over the first three games of the series. "A lot of people didn't think we'd be in this position and maybe some of us in here didn't think that, either.

"We're going to come to the yard and give it a hard nine."

The Phillies were dispatched in order by Jason Motte in the ninth, with center fielder Jon Jay making a sliding catch on Placido Polanco's soft fly for the final out. Jay was already pointing his index finger before he got to his feet.

"I've been dreaming of a World Series, not the Division Series," Freese said. "We've got to keep winning."

Phillies cleanup hitter Ryan Howard, like Freese a St. Louis product, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. He's 0 for 8 in the last two games with five strikeouts and has hit only one ball out of the infield.

"I think I've been a little bit anxious trying to go up and trying to make things happen instead of letting things happen," Howard said. "Right now I'm just kind of jumping, so just try to recognize pitches better."

Game 5 on Friday night will be a rematch of aces: 19-game winner Roy Halladay against Chris Carpenter, the 2005 NL Cy Young winner who won 10 of his last 12 decisions to finish 11-9 this season.

Halladay, a two-time Cy Young winner, beat Carpenter in the opener after the Cardinals right-hander struggled pitching on three days' rest for the first time in his career. Manager Tony La Russa took a shot in that game knowing he'd have Carpenter ready to go on full rest if the series went the distance.

Matt Holliday had a hit and scored twice in his first playoff start and expects to be ready for Game 5.

"If I wasn't part of it, I sure would be watching it," Holliday said. "I think it's going to be great TV. To have a chance for a Game 5 and a chance to move on to the championship series with Carp on full rest, that's all we can ask."

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel didn't seem too surprised his team was getting tested early. The Cardinals took the season series 6-3.

"Might be fitting that it goes down to the fifth game," Manuel said. "It's up to us to go get it. It's sitting right there for us. We've got our ace going, and we're at home, and so everything is sitting right there."

An omen, perhaps, was the unusual sight of a squirrel dashing across the plate right after Oswalt threw a pitch for a ball in the fifth. Oswalt argued, unsuccessfully, that he had been distracted.

"I didn't want to stop in the middle of my motion, so I threw it," Oswalt said. "I was wondering what size of animal it needed to be for it not to be a pitch."

Oswalt had been 5-0 with a 3.25 ERA in 10 previous postseason starts, the biggest one closing out old Busch Stadium and the Cardinals in 2005 to get Houston to its first World Series. The right-hander also worked seven shutout innings against St. Louis in the Phillies' NL East division clincher in mid-September, and was staked to a 2-0 lead in the first.

He just couldn't get Freese out.

"I think I don't have to say too much about David Freese," Manuel said. "I think he kind of won the game."

Freese's two-run double down the third-base line in the fourth put St. Louis up 3-2. His two-run homer to straightaway center in the sixth whipped the crowd into a towel-waving frenzy.

Albert Pujols was hitless in four at-bats in what could have been his final home game with the Cardinals. He received thunderous cheers every trip to the plate from a standing-room crowd of 47,071, the second-largest at 6-year-old Busch Stadium.

Pujols made his presence known on defense, catching Chase Utley going for an extra base in the sixth. Utley drew a leadoff walk and kept running on Hunter Pence's grounder to short, but Pujols alertly jumped off first base to catch the throw and made a sharp relay to third for the out.

"This is obviously the playoffs, but that's a play I can make in the regular season, too," Pujols said. "If I would have stayed on the bag, it was going to be tough to get the runner at third. Obviously, that killed the rally right there."

Edwin Jackson recovered from a rocky beginning to win his first playoff start. After giving up two runs on his first five pitches, he wound up throwing six solid innings.

Five pitches into the game, the Phillies had a 2-0 lead with an assist from the late-afternoon playing conditions.

Jay, standing in bright sunshine while shadows enveloped most of the field, took one step in on leadoff man Jimmy Rollins' drive on the first pitch of the game and retreated too late for a ball just over his glove that bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double.

Utley tripled just inside the first-base line three pitches later and Pence lined an RBI single on the next pitch.

The Phillies' other run came on a wild pitch by Fernando Salas in the eighth.

"We jumped out and scored two runs, and that was about most of the hitting that we did," Manuel said. "Outside of that we couldn't really put nothing together."

Omega-3 Supplements Don't Help, May Hurt ICU Patients - Health ...

By Amanda Gardner
HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 5 (HealthDay News) ? Nutritional supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids or antioxidants don?t help patients with severe lung problems in the intensive care unit, a new study indicates.

According to the researchers, supplements may actually harm patients with pneumonia or sepsis. Patients given the supplements were on ventilators for more days, stayed in the intensive care unit (ICU) longer and were at a slightly higher risk of dying than their counterparts who didn?t get supplements.

?Not only did it not help, but it may be worse,? said Dr. Todd W. Rice, lead author of a paper published online Oct. 5 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, to coincide with a presentation at the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine meeting in Berlin.

The trial was stopped early because the results were so disappointing.

?Pharmaconutrition? has attracted increasing interest in recent years.

?The field of nutritional supplementation for critical-care patients is growing. Just like for community-dwelling persons, the hypothesis is that what you eat could affect your outcome when you?re seriously ill,? said Dr. Deborah J. Cook, author of an editorial accompanying the study and academic chair of critical care medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

The science behind the idea is that nutritional supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish), linolenic acid and antioxidants could quell the inflammation associated with acute lung injuries.

Three earlier, albeit smaller, studies had presented promising data, leading up to the current study, said by the researchers to be the largest undertaken to date.

The trial was supposed to enroll 1,000 patients, but was halted after results came in on only 272 patients.

All patients were in the ICU on ventilators because of lung problems and had been randomly assigned to receive nutritional supplements twice a day or simply nutrition without the supplements through their tube feedings.

Although the supplements did increase fatty acid levels in the blood (they didn?t change in the control group), they didn?t improve anything else.

Patients receiving the twice-daily supplements were on ventilators longer (14 days vs. 10.8 for the control arm), stayed in the ICU longer (14 days vs. 11.3 days) and had more days of diarrhea.

They were also more likely to die. After 60 days, 26.6 people receiving omega-3 had died vs. 16.3 percent in the control group. However, the difference was not considered to be clinically significant.

There were some differences between this study and the previous ones that may help explain the different results.

Unlike previous studies, in this trial regular nutrition was delivered separately from the supplements and in two doses as opposed to a continuous feed.

?We thought it would be a benefit for patients who couldn?t tolerate full feeding,? explained Rice, an assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

And previous control mixes were high in fat, whereas this one was mostly carbohydrates.

But it?s unclear at this point if these differences actually can explain the divergent results, if there are other factors at play or if nutritional supplements really don?t hold out any hope for these critically ill patients.

?The next logical step,? said Rice, ?is to look at the different components, fatty acids, carbohydrates and protein, to see if any of them make a difference in improving outcomes.?

Adding nutritional supplements is not ?the standard of care? at this time, said Dr. Hormoz Ashtyani, director of pulmonary critical care and sleep medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey.

?Now we have a couple of smaller papers that say this helps somewhat and a bigger one that says it doesn?t, so this has to go on and be investigated further,? Ashtyani said. ?This paper is a caution to those who were using it on an off-label basis, who were being a little bit avant garde, that maybe they shouldn?t be doing this.?

Truck bomb kills dozens in capital of Somalia (AP)

MOGADISHU, Somalia ? Al-Qaida-linked militants launched their deadliest single bombing in Somalia on Tuesday, killing 70 people and demonstrating how the group that blocked aid to famine victims can still mount devastating violence even after most of its fighters fled the capital in August.

A truck loaded with drums of fuel exploded outside the Ministry of Education on one of central Mogadishu's busiest streets, where students and their parents were registering for scholarships offered by the Turkish government.

Rebels of the al-Shabab militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombing, saying it was striking government officials and foreigners ? referring to African Union peacekeeping troops supporting the U.N.-backed regime.

Although the Islamic fighters made what they called a "tactical withdrawal" from their bases in Mogadishu amid an AU offensive in August, they had vowed to carry out devastating suicide attacks.

The thunderous blast covered the city in dust more than a half-mile away and left blackened corpses sprawled amid burning vehicles. One woman used a blue plastic bucket to pour water on a charred and smoldering body.

Rescuers rushed scores of victims with burns and severed limbs to Medina Hospital, said nurse Ali Abdullahi. Even in a city beset by war and anarchy for two decades, the bombing horrified medical workers.

"It is the most awful tragedy I have ever seen," he said. "Imagine ? dozens are being brought here minute by minute. Most of the wounded people are unconscious and others have their faces blackened by smoke and heat."

Duniya Salad sobbed over her brother's burned body after he died while undergoing treatment. "They killed him before he started university! Why was he killed? Damn to al-Shabab," she said.

At least 70 people were killed and 42 wounded, said Ali Muse, chief of Mogadishu's ambulance service.

"The explosion has not only affected the targeted place, but even passer-by people and car passengers died there. The death toll may increase and we are still carrying many dead bodies," he said. "It is the worst tragedy I have ever seen in the capital."

Maj. Gen. Fred Mugisha, the commander of the African Union Mission to Somalia force, known as AMISOM, said the attack targeted several Somali government institutions.

The suicide bomber detonated the explosives after the vehicle rammed a checkpoint outside a compound housing several government ministries, Mugisha said.

The attack shows that the danger from terrorists is not yet over and that there are obviously still people who want to derail the advances that the Somali people have made toward peace," the government statement said.

In a message on a website used by al-Shabab, the group said its "mujahedeen fighters have entered a place where ministers and AMISOM foreigners stay," referring to the Ugandan and Burundian peacekeeping forces.

Two years ago, al-Shabab was blamed for an attack on a graduation ceremony that killed 24 people, including three government ministers, medical students and doctors.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he was "appalled" by Tuesday's attack, which he called "incomprehensible."

The attack was "all the more abhorrent coming at a time when Somali political leaders, through efforts such as the recent Mogadishu Conference, have been working together to chart a peaceful political future for Somalia," said Ban's spokesman, Martin Nesirky.

The secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, condemned what he called a "heinous" attack on civilians.

The U.N. Special Representative for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga, had warned that al-Shabab would resort to guerrilla-style attacks following their retreat.

"Although the extremists have left the capital, it is very difficult to prevent these types of terrorist attacks which we have consistently warned are likely to be on the increase," Mahiga said. Al-Shabab still holds much of southern and central Somalia.

The attack came as Somalia struggles to rebound from its worst famine in 60 years, a crisis that has brought even more misery to a country mired in violence since 1991.

Al-Shabab fighters have compounded the suffering by preventing aid agencies from helping famine victims in areas under militant control in southern Somalia. The U.S. says 29,000 children have died since the famine began, and the U.N. says 750,000 more are at risk of starving to death in the next few months.

Witnesses say the insurgents even killed men who tried to flee the famine zone with their families, saying it was better for them to die than accept help from the West.

Suicide bombings were unheard of in Somalia before 2007 but have become increasingly frequent. Al-Shabab, which was formed about five years ago, claims allegiance to al-Qaida, which often uses car bombs and appears bent on gaining a greater foothold in the Horn of Africa.

Al-Shabab includes militant veterans of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars who have trained Somalis in tactics such as suicide bombs and sniper fire, and until recently hosted the most wanted al-Qaida operative in Africa. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, al-Qaida's top operative in East Africa, was killed by a Somali government soldier at a Mogadishu security checkpoint in June.

He masterminded the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Al-Shabab carried out a double suicide bombing in Uganda in July 2010 that killed 76 people watching the World Cup final on TV. Americans of Somali heritage also have joined the group.
