(Fayetteville, N.C.) ? A local wheelchair basketball team, part of Paralympic Sport Club Fayetteville-Cumberland, which utilizes Gilmore Therapeutic and Massey Hill recreation centers for services, finished second recently in the?Carolina Wheelchair Basketball Association Conference Tournament.?The Fayetteville Flyers competed in the Charleston, S.C. tournament, and were coached by Bradford Melvin, assistant director at Massey Hill and Gilmore.
The?Flyers received a bye in the first round due to finishing first in their division during the regular season. The team won its first two games, then lost on Sunday in the double elimination tournament. The Flyers played their way out of the loser?s bracket and into the championship game, which they lost for a second place finish.
The team also took home some awards for their efforts. Melvin was named coach of the year for the North Division. Michael Whitlock was named all-conference and conference player-of-the-year for the North Division. Tee Foster, Ron Smith, and John Burton also received all-conference accolades; Foster made the all-tournament team, as well, and Burton received the tournament sportsmanship award.
Massey Hill & Gilmore Therapeutic recreation centers are run by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation and feature activities for Paralympics and Special Olympics. Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation received accreditation as an official Paralympic Sport Club in March 2011.

Gilmore is a part of the Fayetteville-Cumberland Therapeutic Recreation Division, which was recently selected to receive a $10,000 grant for sports and physical activity programs for disabled veterans and Warriors in Transition. Adaptive sports equipment such as air guns and targets for a new marksmanship program are examples of items that are planned to be purchased with the grant. Adaptive recreation programs are offered at Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center, 1600 Purdue Drive in Fayetteville, and Massey Hill Recreation Center, 1612 Camden Road in Fayetteville.
