New Google custom search | Get Your Geek On!

You either love or hate searching the Internet.? You love it if you?re looking up those funny videos. You hate it if you have to do a research paper.? You can love or hate it at the same time if you?re trying to replace a major appliance, and you?re looking at your choices online.? But you still hate it doing boring homework, that regardless of how you put the words on paper? it?s still boring as crap on paper.??

I can?t save you from your love hate relationship over a major appliance.? Just remember it looks good until you get it home and find out it has more buttons and nobs than your TV! ?Homework is homework; you love the subject, can tolerate it, or can?t stand it.? Instead of thinking of it as not being able to stand it, do yourself a favor, and try to come up with ways that you could use the subject in a situation today.? Sometimes knowing your homework could help you out one day tends to move certain subjects at least to the tolerable level.

Research, on any type of papers regardless their subject content can drag on for days if you don?t have a good search engine.? There are some good search engines like the one I pointed out in the past, but they are limited to age, or grade, or what the teacher outlines. ?I found out raising children that there will always be one that is a head of the class.? There will also be one behind the class.? So why have a search engine that caters to one age group that is either being held back, or pushed forward?? I have nothing against the search engine.? But I believe in choice.

If a teacher sets up the class to use a search engine on a science project they want you to use more than one website to do your research on.? They may want you to reference several different file types, and your paper will have to show that you understand the subject.

Some teachers give their students free will to look up the information on their own.? If you have such teachers then use this search engine.? This search engine uses almost 400 reference sites in the educational field. ?Everything is searchable from addition to world history, and in-between, and then some.? Use it if the links your teacher gave you really don?t cover all the topics of a subject.

Teachers you can turn your class over to this search engine knowing that the click-able links won?t lead your student astray.? Give it a try, test it out, and see if it will benefit you.? If something is missing let me know, I can update it. ?The search engine uses Google as it main engine, and I painstakingly added almost 400 good educational content links.?? I set it up so students can?t stray off topic.? Unless the link was added the content won?t be shown. ?Enjoy!

Are laser-firing drones the weed killers of the future?

1 day

Swarms of robotic drones outfitted with solid-state lasers may be tomorrow?s environmentally-friendly weed killers, according to a team of German researchers.

While this this may sound at odds with the idyll of an organic farmer toiling away in the fields, the research team says the lasers eliminate the need for toxic herbicides and labor-intensive weed control.

The drones would seek out and destroy weeds by frying their growth centers with a finely-tuned laser beam, according to scientists working on the project at Leibniz University and Laser Zentrum Hanover.

Sensors and sophisticated algorithms on board the drones would allow the robots to distinguish between weed and crop and determine the right strength of the beam required to kill the weed.

To date, the team has demonstrated the technology in the lab and greenhouse where the laser is mounted on a track over the weeds.

The next step is to deploy the technology in the field. This is tricky since the vibrations of tractor-mounted system would interfere with accuracy, leading to fried crops as well as weeds.

Hence, the idea of mounting the lasers on drones, which the team apparently thinks might be steadier.

Rates of PTSD among soldiers returning from Afghanistan and Iraq are dramatically lower than predicted

A decade after the start of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, studies have shown that the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among troops is surprisingly low, and a Harvard researcher credits the drop, in part, to new efforts by the Army to prevent PTSD, and to ensure those who do develop the disorder receive the best treatment available.

In an article that appears in the May 18 issue of Science, Professor of Psychology Richard J. McNally says there is reason for cautious optimism when it comes to the prevalence of PTSD. While early estimates suggested as many as 30 percent of troops might develop PTSD, current surveys show the actual rates ranging from 2.1 to 13.8 percent. The most rigorous survey of American troops found that 4.3% of all American military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan developed PTSD, and 7.6 of those reporting combat exposure did so.

"As a society we're much more aware of these issues than ever before," McNally said. "That is reflected by the fact that the military and the Veteran's Administration has established programs to ensure soldiers receive the best treatment possible. The title of my article is 'Are We Winning the War Against Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder?' I think a provisional answer to that is, 'Yes, we might be.'"

While part of the drop may simply be that wars are less lethal in a decade of war in Iraq, fewer than 5,000 American troops were killed, compared to more than 55,000 killed over a similar period in Vietnam McNally suspect that new efforts by the Army to tackle the disorder sooner, and ensure soldiers receive the best treatment available, may be helping, too.

The suggestion that 30 percent of troops might develop PTSD was based on the findings of the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS), completed in 1990, which found that 30.9 percent of Vietnam veterans showed symptoms of the PTSD. While later analyses brought that number down, the findings served to galvanize Army efforts to address the risk of soldiers developing the disorder, McNally said.

"It's important to remember that simply being deployed carries a great deal of stress," McNally said. "Soldiers miss their family, and those who stay at home essentially become a one-parent family. Difficulties with children, or school or making ends meet there are all kinds of stressors that have to do with separating families, let along having one member in a war zone. Fortunately, the military has taken steps to help soldiers cope with these stressors in addition to the traumatic combat stressors that can produce PTSD."

That cognizance has emerged in the form of the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness (CSF) program and Battlemind training, programs created, respectively, to help soldiers build the resilience necessary to reduce their risk for PTSD before being deployed, and to treat those at risk of developing the disorder after they return.

"It's not therapy per se, but a preventive intervention to help people put their experiences in perspective," McNally said, of the Battlemind training. "For example, it encourages soldiers to use the sort of emotional bonding that happens within units to reconnect with their families, and to see symptoms like hyper-vigilance not as symptoms of a mental disorder, but as something they need to adjust when they come home. It helps people realize that those things are part of the normal re-adjustment process."

And thus far, McNally said, the evidence suggests that the training has a positive effect. The results of random trials show that, four months after returning home, soldiers who underwent Battlemind training showed fewer symptoms of PTSD and depression than did those who underwent the Army's standard postdeployment program. Unfortunately, no such trials have been conducted with CSF, so it remains unclear what impact, if any, it has on the incidence of PTSD.

Despite such efforts, however, some soldiers will develop PTSD, McNally said.

Those who do will now have access to what are known to be the best treatments for the disorder, including prolonged exposure and cognitive processing therapy.

"Until this initiative, less than 10 percent of the clinical specialists in PTSD used these treatments," McNally said. "These treatments weren't available to veterans of the Vietnam War they were only developed in the 1990s and the evidence shows that the longer you have PTSD, the more likely it is that other problems will accumulate. The earlier we can get people into treatment, the quicker we can help them get their lives back together."

(AP) ? Iran's top nuclear negotiator said Thursday his country is seeking "cooperation" from world powers in next week's nuclear talks in Baghdad and warned against pressure by the West.

Saeed Jalili said the talks in the Iraqi capital have to recognize Iran's rights to a nuclear program, insisting Tehran will not yield to any "pressure strategy."

"Cooperation is what we can talk about in Baghdad," Jalili, Iran's nuclear negotiator with the West, said in comments broadcast on state television. "Talks based on the definite rights of the Iranian nation."

"Some say time is running out for the talks," he added. "I say time for the (West's) pressure strategy is running out."

The West suspects Iran is pursuing nuclear arms, and is trying to get Iran to halt its controversial nuclear enrichment, which is a potential pathway to atomic weapons.

Tehran denies the charge and insists its program is for peaceful purposes, such as energy generation and cancer treatment.

After talks in Istanbul last month, which both sides praised as positive, Iran and the permanent members of the U.N Security Council plus Germany are to hold the second round May 23 in Baghdad.

A few days after that, the U.N. atomic agency is to release its latest report card on Iran's nuclear efforts.

Jalili said he recently heard "some remarks from Western leaders" about keeping pressure on Iran and urged them not to repeat past mistakes in dealings with Tehran.

"I warn them to be careful and not to fall prey to such miscalculations," he added.

His remark is likely a response to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's comment earlier this month on the success of the sanctions.

"We don't believe Iran would be back at the negotiating table unless there had been the unrelenting pressure of international sanctions. And this pressure must stay on if we want to see progress toward a peaceful resolution," Clinton had said.

Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have failed to get Iran to halt the enrichment program but latest U.S. and European punitive measures, including an oil embargo and financial and banking sanctions, have severely limited Iran's ability to carry on economic transactions with the international community.

Majority of Americans reject new US-Afghan security pact: poll

A large majority of Americans disapprove of a new strategic partnership with Afghanistan that will keep US troops on Afghan soil beyond 2014, according to a Monitor/TIPP poll.

A large majority of Americans do not favor the new strategic?partnership with Afghanistan signed during a surprise visit to Kabul?last week by President Obama.

Skip to next paragraph Ben Arnoldy

Deputy International Editor

Ben Arnoldy is the Deputy International Editor at The Christian Science Monitor. He has served as the Monitor's bureau chief in India and Northern California.?

Recent posts

By a margin of 63 percent disapproval to 33 percent approval, respondents rejected a?description of the deal that will include a US troop presence and?billions of dollars in monetary support for Afghan forces in the?decade after 2014, according to a Monitor/TIPP poll conducted April 27?to May 4.

Unusually for a key issue facing Americans in an election year, the lack?of support was bipartisan, showing only small differences across the ideological spectrum. However, with few national politicians?dissenting on the broad outlines of the Afghanistan policy, the popular?unhappiness has few immediately discernable political consequences.

Some of the polling was done before Mr. Obama had a chance to outline?his case for the deal in a national televised address on May 1, the anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden.

In that address, Obama presented the partnership as enabling a?withdrawal of most US forces by 2014 while still safeguarding?Afghanistan in the long-term from a return of Al Qaeda.

?The agreement we signed today sends a clear message to the Afghan?people: As you stand up, you will not stand alone,? said Obama.??Within this framework, we will work with the Afghans to determine?what support they need to accomplish two narrow security missions?beyond 2014: counterterrorism and continued training.?

Under the 10-year agreement, US forces would have access to Afghan?bases beyond 2014 for training Afghans and hunting Al Qaeda. The US commits to ask Congress annually to help pay for Afghanistan?s?security forces, whose cost outstrips the country?s budget.

The agreement does not spell out US troop numbers or dollar figures.?However, estimates for the yearly cost of sustaining the Afghan forces envisioned after 2014 are upwards of $4 billion. US and Afghan?officials have suggested the US will pay several billion dollars a?year annually, with the rest coming from the Afghans and from NATO?partners.

In his address, Obama conceded Americans were tired of the war.??Others will ask why we don?t leave immediately. That answer is also?clear: we must give Afghanistan the opportunity to stabilize.?Otherwise our gains could be lost, and Al Qaeda could establish itself?once more.?

Since the summer of 2010, however, tracking polls from the Pew?Research Center show a majority of Americans want US troops to come home from Afghanistan ?as soon as possible? rather than stay ?until the?situation is stabilized.? Pew?s most recent poll in mid-April found a?60 to 32 split for leaving now.?That split resembles closely the new Monitor/TIPP poll on the?strategic partnership deal.

Respondents in the TIPP poll were asked: ?The US plans to remove most American forces?from Afghanistan by 2014. To help Afghanistan after 2014, the US will?sign a 10-year deal that keeps some US troops there and the US will?also spend several billion dollars a year on the Afghan military. Do?you approve or disapprove of such US involvement in Afghanistan beyond?2014??

Among Democrats, 13 percent strongly approved, 17 percent somewhat?approved, 19 percent somewhat disapproved, and 46 percent strongly disapproved. Among Republicans, the percentages skewed only slightly?more positive, 15, 22, 20, and 38, respectively. For independents, the?percentages were 12, 21, 15, and 49.

The margin of error was plus/minus 3.3 percentage points.

Few discernible trends were noted between races, genders, or types of?hometown. Older Americans were substantially more likely to strongly disapprove of the deal. Cohorts under age 45 registered strong?disapproval in the 30 percent range, while more than 50 percent of?those over 45 strongly disapproved.

Such broad dissent raises questions about whether the president has a?democratic mandate to commit the US to a long-term deal. But the most contentious issues ? troop numbers and dollar figures ? will involve?consulting Congress.

Despite its unpopularity, America?s longest war has not stirred the?intensity of passions that surrounded the Iraq war. Only small numbers?have taken protests into the streets, with expressions of dissent?mostly limited to social media efforts from groups like Rethink?Afghanistan.

War protesters and members of the Occupy movement are planning to converge on Chicago ahead of a NATO?summit on Afghanistan scheduled for May 20. At that summit, the US will ask its NATO partners to commit to covering some of the costs of?Afghan security forces post-2014.

Just In Time For A Facebook IPO Tax Break, Eduardo Saverin Renounces U.S. Citizenship

eduardoWell that's some slick timing. Eduardo Saverin, known for co-founding Facebook with Mark Zuckerberg back in their college days at Harvard, has given up his United States citizenship. His name appeared on a list published on April 30 by the United States Office of the Federal Register, which issues a quarterly list of people who have given up their U.S. citizenship. The switch will almost certainly decrease the number of American taxes he owes on the $3.84 billion or so he is reportedly in line to make once Facebook goes public, which is widely expected to happen next week.

American Idol Final 4 Review, Take 2: Wishes Granted

First, the American Idol finalists took on to California last night, covering singles by artists or bands that hailed from the Golden State.

Then, for their next quartet of songs, Phillip Phillips, Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez took on tracks they wished they, themselves, had written. A very odd theme, no doubt? But did it lead to any memorable performances? You tell us...

Phillip Phillips made like Damien Rice on "Volcano," breaking out his guitar like usual and following up "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" with this take:

Hollie Cavanagh slowed things down for a version of the Bonnie Raiit hit "I Can't Make You Love Me." Audio only, folks, we apologize:

James Brown, meet Joshua Ledet. This finalist became the latest Idol to turn "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" into his own:

Jessica Sanchez ended the evening with a powerful version of "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Compare it now to her performance of "Steal Away."

Jetman swoops across Brazilian skyline (+video)

The Swiss aviator Yves Rossy recently flew across the Rio de Janeiro sky with his jet-propelled wing, parachuting safely to a southern Brazilian beach.

Thursday morning, the Swiss pilot Yves Rossy fell into the blue Rio de Janeiro sky with the backward rolling entry of a scuba diver. He began with a downward plunge toward the Brazilian cityscape, then leveling off and completing a barrel role before vapor-trailing past the Deco statue Cristo Redentor, tracking south and finally pulling his parachute to land safely on Copocabana beach.

All of this was done with the jet-powered wing that Rossy helped design.

Lasting over 11 minutes, this was only one in a series of flights made by the self-described "Jetman." Over the past half-decade, he has flown across the Grand Canyon, over the Alps and even between actual jet airplanes.

His recent successes have come with some ominous setbacks, though. In 2009, Rossy attempted to fly across the Strait of Gibraltar, which geographically separates Spain from Morocco, but strong winds and engine complications forced him to scuttle into the Mediterranean, where he had to be rescued by?helicopter.?The Spanish coast guard later retrieved his jet wing.

Rossy's wing is the result of over a decade of trouble-shooting, which decade has seen over 15 prototypes of the model. In its current design, the wing is made from carbon-fiber and spans roughly eight feet. Strapped to the back of the pilot, it is propelled by four mounted kerosene jet engines up to speeds of 189 miles per hour.

Classified as a legitimate aircraft by the FAA, the wing was engineered to let Rossy "fly like a bird, with a minimum of instruments but with the ability to steer himself in space," according to the Jetman website. One of the most complex technologies Rossy's wing employs, aside from the engines, are the altimeter, used for safety purposes, and the throttle that Rossy holds in his hand. He uses his body to steer.

Perhaps more interesting than Rossy's innovative technology is the endeavor it embodies. Human flight has always been motivated by the desire to mimic bird flight. The word "aviation," after all, comes from the Latin word for bird, "avis." By attempting to create the most visceral experience of human flight, the Jetman project might be the truest expression of our envy for the utter freedom of the birds that soar overhead.

Seven Days of Sex Day 4: Hump Day

About to pop!!! Here we are day four and I am tired! It has been an exhausting week (in fact these are being posted very late and I?ll tell ya, why in a bit!!) We have been through the ringer this week and I think this challenge is keeping s connected. Otherwise we may be short(er) with each other and not really be on any kind of romantic level at all. Bills, kids and being in labor for a few days will do that to you! That is right, on day 3 I started having contractions. Not enough to do anything but enough to make me very uncomfortable. I am hoping to get this baby out while my blood pressure is still manageable. I am doing a natural water birth at a birth center and if my blood pressure goes too high, I will have to transfer care to a doctor in a hospital. So I am so glad we are having sex daily! Maybe it is what is starting to get things going here!!! Today was hump day and it went well. We went to my weekly midwife appointment, listened to the baby?s heartbeat, my blood pressure was still [...]

Blurb, The Custom Book Printing Startup, Is Tossing Its Hat Into The E-Book Ring

Screen Shot 2012-05-02 at 4.43.48 PMBlurb has had a good amount of success as a disruptive player in the "traditional" publishing space. The San Francisco-based company, which lets anyone write and publish a physical book at relatively affordable prices, has built a profitable business with more than 100 staff and more than a million paying customers since it launched to the public six years ago. But according to founder and CEO Eileen Gittins, Blurb wants more. Blurb is expanding into the e-book space this summer, gradually rolling out a software platform that will allow people to create and distribute multimedia-enabled digital books. So why is Blurb going into an industry in which even huge, established publishing players have notoriously had serious difficulties making money?

Justin Bieber Brings 'Boyfriend' Video To MTV Thursday!

Following the 7:50 p.m. video premiere, Bieber will answer your questions live on MTV.com.

Justin Bieber is ready to be your "Boyfriend." The singer will sit down with MTV News' Sway Calloway on Thursday (May 3) to premiere his highly anticipated music video for the single during "MTV First: Justin Bieber" live at 7:50 p.m. ET on MTV.

After the video premieres on air, Bieber will chat with Sway for 30 minutes on MTV.com, opening up about the Director X-directed clip, as well as his June 19 album release, Believe. But that's not all: If you have a burning question for Bieber, you can get in on the fun by commenting below or tweeting @MTVNews with the hashtag #MTVFirst or #AskBieber.

Immediately following the premiere, the "Boyfriend" video will be available on MTV.com so Beliebers can watch it over and over and over again.

"Boyfriend," the lead single from Believe, was co-produced and co-written by Mike Posner and Mason Levy. The track stormed radio and the charts back in March, reaching #2 on Billboard's Hot 100.

Bieber was spotted in Los Angeles last month shooting some scenes for the video. He was photographed kissing a brunette who looked a lot like his real-life lady love, Selena Gomez, and was also driving some high-end muscle cars.

"The reaction's been great [to 'Boyfriend']; not only have I got good reactions from my fans, but great reactions from people who, you know, [might not usually listen to my music]. I've gotten messages like 'You know, I never would have listened to Justin and now I love this song,' " he told MTV News about the track. "So it's really great feedback."

While Bieber rides solo on "Boyfriend," he's enlisted a number of his A-list pals to appear on Believe, including Usher, Kanye West, Drake and perhaps even Lil Wayne. Just last week, Bieber dropped the artwork for the album, which features a close-up of the pop star's face and the collar of his studded jacket.

Don't miss the "Boyfriend" video premiere Thursday, May 3, at 7:50 p.m. ET/PT on MTV during "MTV First: Justin Bieber," followed by a live Q&A with Justin himself on MTV.com!

BBC's Planet Earth returns as a live simulcast next week -- but not in the US (video)

For fans of HD and / or nature documentaries, the BBC Planet Earth series is the unquestioned champion, and to provide a proper followup the Brits are improving it the only way they know how: doing it live. What the broadcaster calls its "most ambitions global wildlife series ever" will air simultaneously in 140 countries (more on that bit later) starting Sunday May 6th, then every Thursday and Sunday for three weeks. The plan is to track animals in seven different locations around the world in real time as they struggle for survival and broadcast it all in HD. One segment features Top Gear's Richard Hammond following a pride of lions across southern Kenya, while another will track black bears in Minnesota. The bad news? If you're in the US or Canada you're not on that 140 country list and won't be seeing any of this live. We're not sure if there's time to make this a campaign issue in the 2012 presidential election but we figure that, or at least bugging BBC America (while we're on the subject -- where's our global iPlayer?) is worth a try. Check after the break for a press release with all the details on where and when it is airing, as well as a trailer.

Update: While we won't be getting the live simulcast, BBC's Paul Deane dropped in a comment below noting it will air the next day on National Geographic Wild retitled as 24/7 Wild. We haven't located a program description yet, but there are already listings in the schedule starting May 7th -- schedule your DVRs accordingly.
