LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- At least 20 families in Los Lunas got word this week that their children can no longer attend pre-school classes after being in school for weeks.The pre-kindergarten classes are for special education students, but some students no longer fit that definition.Lisa Goode, 4, is still a little soft-spoken. Her father said the time she spent inside Daniel Fernandez Elementary in the pre-kindergarten special education program is making a difference.?She went from not being very vocal to talking very well,? Jeff Goode said.But that progress is in jeopardy.?Out of the blue, the IEP Director called and said, ?The state says we've got to cut people down and your daughter doesn't qualify because she's category A, so we can't have her,?? Goode said.After being in class for four days a week last year and two days a week this year, Lisa is now only eligible for one hour of instruction each week.Roughly 20 families got similar news in the Los Lunas district this week. The school district said it all goes back to a July letter from the state, which clarifies who should qualify for special education service if they suffer from a speech disorder.The public education department sent Action 7 News a statement that said, ?We plan to work very closely with the school district on this matter. We are absolutely committed to making sure every child in Los Lunas and across New Mexico get all the services they deserve.?One family said that needs to happen immediately.?I think with her getting cut off, she's going to get left behind on this one,? Goode said.Los Lunas Schools said it will be adding more peer mentors or kids who are considered exceptionally bright to fill the spots that are now left open.The state said it will look into the situation to see if it can figure out a solution.
